If you’ve ever done Europe by train, you’ve passed through this station. Perhaps even stopped there if you’re a hiker, or maybe you wanted to tour the wine celrs, for some reason you neglected the lights of the old capitals, the world css museums, the theaters and the ndmarks that define the skylines of a Paris or a Berlin. You decided to get off the train out in the boonies.

You know that station: it’s got two ptforms and gets three trains a day each way, and there’s not even a tunnel so you have to walk across the tracks to get to the station “building”, a three walls little thing that offers a bit of shelter for the metal bench and the ticket machine that works almost every time except when some bitter kid plugged the coin slit with a gum. You’d be bitter and bored out of your skin too if your parents made you live out here in the middle of nowhere.

The vilge is a one street affair half a mile down the road from the station, it has a city hall that’s also the post office, open Tuesdays 9 to 5 and on every other Thursday morning, and an inn that opens on hiking and wine tasting season. It closes next week, the vilge is winding down its underwhelming tourism season. I already got my room there according to my orientation package, it also had my train tickets in and out of town. The dy at the counter is nice enough, she welcomes me to her inn that’s really more of a bar-restaurant with a couple rooms on the first floor, she’s sorry but the meal would have to be reheated what with the train company screwing over the town and she swears they must be doing it on purpose to starve them making the evening train show up ter and ter every year. I thank her but I’m fine, I had something on the train. She leaves and I y on the surprisingly comfy bed to check the orientation package again.

I love how seriously they take themselves, it has that silly logo with the fangs and the stick, lots of very official, very self important jargon, it tells me exactly where I need to be and what I need to do for the next two days. Rest tomorrow, investigate the ruined estate house on the hill after dark, find the vamp, deal with them. It’s always the same job really, I swear they get a kick out of making these overly intricate for no reason. A hunt’s a hunt and this isn’t my first rodeo. Still, I read through the whole thing. There’s a whole bit in there about the vampire's suspected history, her skills, her numerous crimes against the living yadda yadda, self-seriousness aside they really ARE thorough with these things.

This one is a particurly nasty bitch: likes to hunt innocent maidens, steals them from their families to make her her thralls, sometimes even turns them completely and make them part of a decadent lesbian harem. Disgusting. I sigh. Oh, the things a girl’s gotta witness when she’s a soldier of light against darkness and perversion.

On the st line of the package, a sentence that finally leaves out the cold and analytic tone, the reason why i’m here really, the heart of the job i’m here to do:

Ms Violetta “heartstalker” Knight, in the name of humanity, you must deal with the vampire known as Lady Menia Sofia Megamastos.
