Spencer

Pierre Lawson stepped out of his car and walked toward the looming building for his meeting. He wasn’t particularly excited for this meeting; he was tired of Biosyn. Ever since Dodgeson had died, the company had stepped up their requests— they always had something they needed him for. Today, he didn’t even know what it was.

“Hey, Brian,” Pierre said as he walked past the security guard at the door. The guard just nodded. It’s 12 o’clock at night! he thought as he stepped into the elevator. Whatever the hell they wanted this time, it’d better be good if he was here right in the middle of the night!

Pierre stepped into the brightly lit room. The hum of the lights disoriented him, along with the bright spots in his vision as his eyes adjusted. He saw Alexander Spencer, the new head of the company, and a few more executives. As far as he thought, Spencer was as delusional as Dodgeson, but still, he had to do his job. It paid the bills, at least.

“Ah, Pierre, so good of you to join us,” Spencer said, his tone impatient. He was a short, thin man with barely any hair, even though he was only in his 30s. He was wearing a brown business suit, and his glasses sat atop his face.

“I’m sorry, sir, it’s just so late—”

Spencer cut him off. “Enough discussion. On to more important matters,” he continued. “Lawson, did you get the report I asked for?”

Pierre nodded and sat down. “Just as you asked, sir.” He handed Spencer a few pages stapled together from his briefcase.

“So, the witness says this girl was attacked by ‘some kind of lizard’?” Spencer asked, imploring.

“Yes, sir. The woman who witnessed it said it was a big lizard, about the size of a chair sideways, that it was grey and had quills.”

“I see. Why is your report so short?” Spencer asked.

“That is all I could scrape up. The Costa Rican government is withholding a lot of the details,” Pierre explained.

“Alright. What about the other sightings, near Mexico?” Spencer asked. “Any news on what those were?”

“Witnesses say that whatever it was, it looked like a giant lizard, taller than a man, and that it walked like a bird and had terrible claws. No one was hurt in that incident. Mexican law enforcement scared the animal away, but we do have a video taken by a witness,” Pierre added as he finished his report.

“Do you have the video with you?” Spencer questioned.

Pierre rooted through his briefcase and brought out a small DVD disc in a case. “I think this is it.” He walked over to the DVD player on the office projector and turned the lights off. The video whirred to a start with a click.

As the video played, Spencer became increasingly interested. When the video ended, he said, “This is what we’ve been looking for! Do we know where this animal went?”

“No,” Pierre replied. “The creature ran away into the nearby woods, some witnesses reported.”

Spencer looked around the room. “Get someone to Mexico to find this thing.”
