Chapter 18 | Sinking Deeper

Although Xanthia's "constitution" attribute continued to improve, her outward appearance remained deceptive.

Anyone seeing her for the first time would mistake her for a "delicate and introverted" soft girl, someone who appeared easy to bully. They might imagine that a little teasing would bring her to tears, her sobs like a string of pearls...

It was beyond her control; her fragile aura seemed intrinsic. Whenever she did things that cshed with her "soft girl" image, the stark contrast only made her more captivating.

Clearly, Xanthia wasn’t concerned with maintaining any specific image. Although she had accepted a task to become someone’s idealized first love, her pyful nature quickly led her to forget about it.

After all, there was no penalty for not completing tasks. As long as she was enjoying herself, that was enough. Living with too much purpose, she thought, only diminished happiness.

The task of becoming the Queen of Hearts would have been much easier once her "appearance" and "charisma" attributes improved. But for now, her focus was on increasing "constitution" and "strength"!

The joy of feeling her body grow stronger each day far outweighed any appeal in becoming a delicate, ornamental figure.

It wasn’t that she completely disregarded "appearance" and "charisma." As a gamer, she understood the importance of prioritization. Being pragmatic and goal-oriented, she chose power first, aesthetics second.

During this period, Xanthia noticed her new deskmate, Dematero, was utterly obsessed with his ideal first love, Elena La Loannou. His infatuation was not easily swayed.

Perhaps this was the enduring charm of a first love?

Dematero, a literature enthusiast, spent his days writing dreamy love poems for Elena. He smiled blissfully as he wrote, the very picture of a love-struck teenager. It was, frankly, amusing.

This "foolish" Dematero had become one of Xanthia’s sources of entertainment. Perhaps this was the essence of youth.

Even though she tried using her "soft girl" tactics on him, Xanthia's charm wasn’t yet refined enough to completely captivate Dematero.

Given the circumstances, she decided to let things unfold naturally, wishing Dematero luck with his first love.

Watching Dematero in his lovesick state reminded Xanthia of the original owner of her body. In her memories, the original Xanthia had never shown interest in any boy, steadfast in her aromantic belief.

But if the original Xanthia had ever liked someone, how would her socially anxious and introverted self have handled it?

She’d likely have written a secret diary, pouring out all the emotions she couldn’t express aloud.

And in her imagination, she would hope the object of her affection might one day stumble upon her diary. Tragically, it would be too te by then—she would have already passed away.

Ah, the bittersweet beauty of youthful, tragic love stories!

Inspired by Dematero, Xanthia found herself a new source of amusement: channeling the original owner’s mindset to write a diary brimming with anguish, inner conflict, and sorrow. It felt like crafting a tragic youth novel. If someone discovered it in the future, perhaps it would even earn her some "pain points."

But this diversion only sted a few days. Once her interest faded and the activity stopped bringing her joy, she abandoned it halfway through, like an author dropping an unfinished story.

After all, she wasn’t the original Xanthia. Perhaps in another alternate timeline, that tragic diary would have been completed, waiting for someone destined to find it.

Xanthia had to admire Dematero’s dedication to literature. His deep love for Elena seemed to awaken a creative spark, as he spent all his free time writing. He never appeared to tire of it.

She almost felt compelled to advise him, reminding him that his grades were important too. But instead of focusing during css, he would daydream, lost in thoughts of Elena.

Still, Xanthia chose not to confront him. Instead, she shared her concerns with Glen, who was closer to Dematero.

"I doubt he thinks much of me," Xanthia admitted. "And honestly, when teenagers fall deeply in love, their whole world revolves around one person, while everyone else fades into the background."

Glen responded with a knowing smile. "I’ve already tried talking to him, but it’s pointless. He’ll only wake up when Elena rejects him outright. That’s the only way."

"Is Elena the type of girl who would reject someone outright?" Xanthia asked casually.

"Not at all. As her desk partner, I know her well. She enjoys the attention boys give her. If she doesn’t actively dislike them, she’ll respond ‘kindly,’ which just gives them more hope but she's not michievious as one might think. She's kind but not pushover either," Glen expined.

Xanthia frowned. A girl like that could lead someone deeper into heartbreak. If she wanted to collect "pain points," she could learn from Elena. But maniputing a "nice and genuine guy" felt dull and unsatisfying.

Noticing Xanthia’s frown, Glen thought, Dematero, you fool. The girl who truly cares about you is right here, and you don’t even see it.

Through Dematero, Glen had gotten to know Xanthia better and found her enjoyable to be around. Sometimes, he didn’t even think of her as a girl—just as a good friend whose company he genuinely appreciated.

"There’s another problem," Glen added. "Dematero’s too timid. He’s terrified of rejection. And because he’s into literature, his imagination runs wild. He moves himself to tears without ever actually confessing. Elena can’t reject him if he never says anything, right?"

Xanthia couldn’t help but silently mock Dematero. His behavior was the epitome of a pretentious, self-pitying literary type—expert at self-indulgence and self-sabotage.

An idea came to her: she could use the system’s "Simution of the Most Painful Rebirth Memory" on Dematero. It might be a perfect case of "fighting fire with fire" and lead to some unexpected results.

But she wouldn’t act recklessly. While the simution could earn her a significant amount of pain points, she wasn’t sure Dematero could endure that level of suffering.

For now, she decided to wait. Let him enjoy the dream of his first love a little longer. When it inevitably shattered, she’d reconsider.
