Chapter Eighteen

As we watched the children—who seemed to be under 5—working below, an alarm suddenly rang out. The children ran from the building. "Hey du rebellischer Abschaum!" a voice shouted. I turned to see a soldier aiming a gun at us. "Was zum Teufel machst du hier Abschaum!"

Before the soldier could fire, Rellik plunged a knife into his neck. He looked at me with a smirk, but it quickly faded as he started to fade into invisibility.

  "Thank you," I said.

  "No problem," Rellik said.

"Behind you!" I shouted. One of those things that burned down the old school was approaching. It swung at me, but I managed to dodge. I pulled out my handgun and fired, but the bullets had no effect. The creature aimed its arm at me, and I noticed a tube on its wrist.

Rellik appeared from nowhere, grabbing its arm and forcing it upward just as flames shot from its wrist. "GO!" he shouted.

I watched in horror as the creature flung Rellik to the ground and engulfed him in flames. "Rellik!" I screamed.

The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

The creature turned toward me, but suddenly Rellik's voice rang out: "Hey you!" There he stood, his burns already healing, smirking at the creature. He charged forward as it backed up against the railing, trying to aim its flamethrower. Rellik seized the moment and shoved it over the edge.

  "What was that?" I asked.

"That was a brute," Rellik said casually.

"Different version?" I had barely finished speaking when the brute exploded into flames next to barrels of gasoline.

"RUN!" Rellik screamed as the barrels exploded, setting the building ablaze. I tried to escape, but the floor gave way beneath me. Just before I fell into the inferno, Rellik caught my hand and pulled me to safety.

"Thanks Rellik," I said with a smirk.

"You're welcome," he replied, returning the smile.

"What do we do?" I asked.

Rellik pointed to a huge window in the roof. "There, look."

"Great, what do we do now?"

Rellik smiled, suddenly scooping me up in his arms.

"What are you doing, Rellik?" I yelled as he leaped through the window, landing on the roof. "You can do that?"

"Yep," he said, still holding me as he jumped to another tenement building's roof. We watched the factory explode below us.

  "What now?" Rellik asked.

"We need to head to our hideout."

  "Where's that?"

"St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church," I replied.

"Let's go then. Just point where it is," Rellik said, lifting me again. We jumped from building to building, making our way to the church.
