Prologue: The Glistening Lake

  “Why don't you understand… I’m tired…”

An ominous aura permeated through my room. It was like a smog that soon enveloped my crippled body. Rain dripped on the glass of my window, the sound of the sky’s tears mimicked my emotions. Math C-, English B, Science C+, History A-.

“I'm trying, yet why is it not enough? Why are my grades so fucking low!?”

My room was filthy, a reflection of my life. The cup of noodles I tried to live off on was ravaged by ants, my books were filled with silverfish, my hair as long as ever. Thunder had struck, my body responded with an unsightly sensation.

The sound of my phone had rung, that sound… that off putting SOUND. Can it just stop? I want to rest. My body couldn't take it anymore, I braced myself, my malnourished body barely stood as I threw my phone against the door, tears of sorrow overwhelmed the anger in my veins as I realized what I've done, my heart ached.

  “M-my phone”

I moved and rushed to check on the gadget… It was full of cracks. My heart beat faster than the sound of the rain.

“why wouldn't they let me have a break, I just want to rest.”

I looked at the cracked phone.

  “A notification? From my mom…?”

My body started to heat up with rage, her name triggered something inside me that I didn’t know as even possible. The room had started to warp while my head started to ache.

“What now? Is she going to lecture me? Is she going to tell me to get myself together? I am together, nothing is wrong with me!”

My thoughts started to bubble up.

“Why does she feel the need to pry into the life of the person she destroyed, she’s the one who’s always right, so she should live her fucking life alone!”

Rage, sadness, frustration, the bubbles of emotions inside me started to nullify, tears streamed down my face as I let out a gut curdling scream. My body started to feel weaker, heavier, my mind felt lighter as I began to stumble back to bed, sleep. Sleep is all I want to do, I don't care about my classes anymore. I fell onto my rock hard bed, blacking out.

  *CHIRP* *CHIRP* *CHIRP*

My eyes cracked open, I jumped to hear crickets chirping.

“Why are there crickets in the middle of the city!”

As I proceeded to my apartment’s living room, I cracked open the door. The aura was dark, gloomy and menacing.

I walked through the room. Something had caught my eye—a blue hue illuminated the room through the windows. I quickly rushed to investigate through the window, it was a beautiful lake, full of aura and intrigue. I rushed out the door, through the narrow hallway, my footsteps had kept slapping on the building’s cold, hard flooring. Before I knew it, I was at the exit.

“No reception…? Should I still go… I should, this phenomena, discovering this will make me rich!”

I burst through the door, every step I took—I felt the sharpness of the grass beneath me. It was there. My eyes gleamed with awe at the phenomena. I fell on the ground, to admire the delightful beauty of the lake so much that I didn’t realize that long white hands had come out of the body of water and grabbed me.

  “What, What the fuck!?”

I tried to fend it off, but it was too strong. The hands pulled me in the lake, as I was dragged deeper into the abyssal lake, I felt my body start to ache; then a flash of numbness filled my body, it was like a toxin. My eyes started to feel heavier and heavier by the second

  “Mom… I’m sorry… Please save me.”

I muttered instinctively, my saline tears polluted the fresh lake

  “I don’t want to die yet. I don’t. I… don’t…”

My body had given up, my mind was filled with complete darkness.

  *FLASH*

A flash bang of light beamed through me, my eyes still in a state of paralyzation.

“Heaven? I never thought I was good? Maybe I was right… That’s right, my mom was wrong about me, I am good…

My eyes opened with a surge of energy throughout my body.

  “What the hell?”

The realm was filled with a tunnel of eyes, full of them, a tunnel of light. Suddenly, I was quickly dragged by something at the back of my body

  “Not again…”

I thought as I was dragged away, blacking out yet again…

The sounds of rapid air movement filled my eyes, the feeling of cool, stagnant water enshrouded my entire body as my eyes regained their power

  “What… Where… Why…”

I coughed out water, my long dark hair was extremely wet, making it hard to lift my head. The sky was as blue as ever.

“Was I just being stupid and was just dreaming?”

I realized the body of water I was currently is, is extremely shallow with sharp edges

  “Ugh…”

I carefully got up, a sharp pain had consumed my heart as my vision blurred to see…

“Red leaves? Red trees with silver bark…? Am I going insane?”

I started to laugh in desperation. I looked at the place around me, it was a forest covered in red foliage. I covered my mouth, my expression was enshrouded with a dark despair

“No… No… This must be a joke right? A prank?”

I sat up, smiling with desperation

  “Hello…? H-hello???? Anybody…????”

I stood up, my feet were punctured with the sharp edges of the pond. A deep sorrow engulfing my veins. My breathing started to intensify, my body shook. I started to cry yet again

“What the hell did I do to even deserve this…?”

While I mourned and took pity on myself, huge footsteps emerged, a dark stature, a wolf with three heads.

  “What…?”

I looked up to see it, my mind blurred, my eyes wide with shock, my body froze in sight. In instinct I covered and clutched my mouth shut. It was looking from behind and I didn’t want it to see me.

“Shit shit shit what is that”

My mind tried greatly to process the mythical creature, my shaking creating ripples within the pond that drew its attention. The beast quickly turned one of its heads to me. I was still frozen in place. It was coming, I didn’t know what to do, I can’t live here but I want to live. Do I just let it kill me?

“I should just let it mangle me up…”

I thought to myself, at least it played a role in this environment right? At least I became useful by nourishing it with my useless life…

It was coming, the small shallow footsteps turned to rushing sprints of speed.

  “NO!”

I screamed out, the last remaining instinct, the adrenaline in my blood, I didn’t want to die like this!?

My legs pushed itself to its limits as I swiftly ducked and jumped away, my body tumbled through the scarlet grass so much so that my back bumped into a tree.

It was a loud thud, my back felt a sharp pain as I coughed out blood, my vision had blurred by the instantaneous pain. I bit my lip drawing blood by trying not to scream and draw any other monsters’ attention.

  “I can’t give up not now… I’d prefer if I had drowned instead…”

I cackled, I cracked a smug smile, my body still aching in pain. I got up quickly as the monster lunged over, I dodged in the nick of time, one of its heads bashed by the tree as I ran for my life till I reached an edge, there wasn’t anywhere else to run. It had already recovered from the wound.

My body went completely limp as my body shook.

“What do I do…? What am I supposed to even do at this point…?”

  That disgusting, fowl creature… It’s coming… I looked at it with a raging glare…

“He’s just a weak little boy”

Voices flooded my mind, in an instant, I was back in my home, my dad was scolding me.

“He’s an insult… He can’t make decisions for himself”

That dark gloomy stare, it was sickening, my mother interjected.

“That's because you never let him decide, you always pick for him, now look what he’s become! Dependent… Weak… Incapable…”

Father had angrily screamed, slamming his fist on the table

“So you’re saying it’s my fault!? You bitch”

My father and mother argued, as I sat there, empty. The slap to my mother’s face, a footstep of that beast. I was back to reality, the painful sting mellowed out as I grabbed a stick from one of the silver trees, determined. I clutched the stick as it raced full throttle.

  *THUD* *THUD* *THUD*

I readied a stance, then threw the stick and without thinking, I jumped off the cliff. It felt like a chain broke off, something that held me back, it was no longer there. I fell with a smile, because I knew I would live.

As I fell down, the creature jumped and fell with me falling to its death, but not me. I was lucky to see the thick rope-like vine, a red vine filled with thick spikes, my hands bled, punctured by its thorns as I let out a scream to ease the pain. Tears of anguish filled my face, I struggled to pull myself back up, I had to… the fall was meters deep, every time I moved up, it felt like a distorting pain, my injured hands’ holes deepened, till that last grip, I was back up, my whole body was aching in pain, my head felt like a hammer had deeply smashed it. I was losing a lot of blood… my consciousness slowly faded away, I fell down in exhaustion. From the sliver of my eye I saw a hooded figure jump down the person’s eyes glowed a deep emerald eyes filled with pity and bloodlust, picking me up as the final drops of my consciousness withered away.
