The beginning of reconstruction.

The morning sun filtered softly through the treetops, bathing the ruins of the old village in a golden light that, for the first time in a long while, seemed to illuminate opportunity rather than just destruction. Kai woke up early, feeling the comforting weight of responsibility on his shoulders. When he opened his eyes, he saw Lyla resting beside him. Although the color had returned to her face thanks to recent level increases, she remained his constant priority.

He got up carefully so as not to wake her, watching as the community began to stir among the makeshift tents and the remains of what were once homes. In front of him, the system message continued to float as a silent reminder to rebuild this village and turn it into the beginning of everything. Kai sighed, feeling the immense pressure but willing to endure it for the sake of everyone.

"It's time to start," he murmured to himself.

His first action was to summon the people he considered most important to begin the project, Thorne, the strong Wolf eared demihuman, Mira, the expert tracker, Roshia, the talented ice mage, and Allice. They all gathered around the ashes of the central campfire, where Kai had already smoothed a patch of dirt to draw on with a branch.

"If we are going to rebuild, we won't do it like before," Kai began, looking fixedly at Thorne and the others. "We don't just want houses, we want a refuge that is both impregnable and functional. Thorne, you will lead the physical labor crews to collect the necessary materials. Mira, I need you to map the exact perimeter and mark the fastest escape routes into the forest."

The allies nodded with respect. There was something in Kai’s voice.

Kai began to trace lines on the ground, designing an organized grid that contrasted with the architectural chaos he had seen before. His vision included wide, straight streets designed to allow a rapid flow of people and, if necessary, defenders.

"We will organize the village into sectors," Kai explained, pointing to his drawings. "In the center, the main building will be located, that is where I will live and where management will take place. But it will also be a public space, we’ll make a plaza with a park where children like Elara can play and people can talk and spend a calm moment together."

"And the houses? Will we build them with stone, wood, and magic?" Thorne asked.

"Not exactly," Kai replied. "We will use magic, yes, but also a special mixture. I will need clay, sand, and straw."

"That sounds... complicated. I've never heard of anything like that," Allice muttered.

"It might seem so at first, but once I show you, it will make sense. Mixed correctly, it hardens as it dries. With that, we will build walls stronger than common mud. And we'll still use the classic materials that have always been used."

"How do you know about that mixture?" Mira questioned.

"It’s... certain knowledge from experiments I did in my childhood, but I never told anyone."

They all nodded, believing Kai’s lie. Kai pointed back to the map.

"The houses will be organized in clusters. Between each cluster, we’ll leave open spaces to prevent fire from spreading if an accident occurs."

Thorne nodded slowly. "That... makes sense."

"We will also build wells and channels for water," Kai continued. "Clean water will come from the wells, but dirty water will be carried out of the village."

  "What for?" Allice asked.

"To keep the village clean. If we let dirty water accumulate near the houses, people will get sick. But if we direct it away, we’ll avoid many problems."

Mira seemed impressed. "I had never thought of that."

If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

  "Neither had I," Thorne added.

Kai continued his explanation. "I also want to build public baths in a quieter area of the village. Keeping everyone clean will help prevent disease. Plus, I’d like to add thermal baths next to them."

  "Thermal baths?" Allice asked, surprised.

"Sure, I have a system in mind to heat the water and create public hot springs."

  "Sounds relaxing."

Kai moved his finger to another area of the map. "Here will be the workshop district. The blacksmith and other artisans will work close to one another. That way, they can share tools and help each other."

"That will make the work faster," Thorne said.

Kai nodded and then pointed to another area near the plaza. "There will be a small market here. People can bring their products to sell or exchange them."

Mira looked increasingly surprised. "Do you really think traders from other villages will come?"

"In the beginning, it will be for local trade, but if the village starts to make a name for itself, they surely will."

He then pointed to a small building drawn near the center. "And here, we will build a school."

The three of them looked at him confused. "A school? Only the wealthy have access to that."

"Yes, but not here. Here, everyone will know how to read, write, and count. They’ll also learn to measure harvests and keep records. A village where people know these things will be a prosperous place."

Mira observed the plan in silence for a moment. "I’ve never heard a plan like this for a village. Won't this bring us trouble with the Kingdom of Athelgard? After all, we are within their territory."

Kai sighed. "It’s likely, but we have Allice, the subordinate of the goddess Lyla. So, I assume they won't bother us."

Everyone present turned to look at her.

"I knew you looked familiar, that’s why you’re so powerful," Mira said. "And you were accompanying Kai and Lyla because they have the same names as your goddess and the hero, right?"

  Allice smiled. "Exactly, that's why."

"It seems you've thought of everything," Thorne murmured.

Kai shook his head. "Not everything. But if we do this right... this village will be a better place to live."

For a few seconds, no one said anything. But looking at the drawing, they all began to imagine what the village would actually be like when it was finished.

During the following weeks, the village bustled with activity directed by Kai with almost military efficiency. He didn't just stand by and watch, he was seen carrying logs, doing the work of three men. He often stopped to correct the angle of a wall or to suggest a joining method for beams that would allow the structures to better withstand strong winds, based on concepts he had studied in Japan.

One afternoon, as the sun set behind the mountains and the sound of hammers finally ceased for the day, Kai found Lyla sitting near the newly repaired well. Instead of waiting for her to approach with her usual possessive hugs or provocative comments, it was Kai who took the first step. He approached and sat beside her, close enough to feel the warmth of her body.

"Are you okay?" Kai asked, actively seeking her gaze.

Her eyes sparkled with that mischievous light he was beginning to love. "I was just thinking about how well you’re doing everything."

Kai let his hand rest on hers. Lyla intertwined her fingers with his, leaning her head on his shoulder with a sigh of satisfaction.

"I feel like I'm finally building something real," Kai confessed in a low voice. "A home for everyone."

Lyla squeezed his hand. "You’ve always had that gift, Kai. You create places where people feel safe."

Kai turned slightly toward her. They were so close he could see the silver reflections in her eyes. For a moment, the world around them disappeared. However, he refrained from going further. He knew their relationship was maturing. He simply sought her contact, wrapping his arm around her to protect her from the evening chill, feeling her nestle against him with total trust.

"By the way, will all this really not bring us trouble with your kingdom?"

Lyla smiled. "The other day, when I left for a bit with Allice, we were with the King, of course, I didn't show myself. But Allice spoke in my name, and King Gabell accepted everything they discussed. For protection, the village remains part of the Kingdom of Athelgard and its lands on paper, but once we have enough strength, we will be independent, and this entire area will be ours."

"That sounds incredible. Is he trustworthy?"

"Of course. After all, he follows my religion, he’s one of ours."

"Thank you for being here, Lyla," he said sincerely.

She didn't respond with words, she only gave him a soft kiss on the cheek, a gesture Kai received with a quiet smile instead of his usual shyness.

Days passed, and under Kai’s direction, the reconstruction continued. One night, Kai entered the main building in the center of the village for the first time, which at that moment he only shared with Allice and Lyla. Allice was already resting, but Lyla was waiting for him by the fireplace.

Kai approached her and, without saying a word, reached for her hand. They sat together watching the fire, sharing a silence that spoke louder than a thousand words. Through the window, he could see the torchlight from the other houses and hear the distant laughter of the community that had formed.

Kai knew there was still a long road ahead, one that would be long and dangerous and that the other nine gods would sooner or later notice his presence. Especially once they cease to be part of Athelgard's territory and become an independent town, just as they had agreed with Gabell.
