Chapter 5: “The Four Elements of Magic”

Eleven o'clock at night was te for wizards who had little to no night life.

But for Tver, this was merely the start of his second reading session.

Out of habit, he reached for one of his cherished tomes—"The Origins of Curse Magic."

Coming home from Durmstrang, it seemed as if the only difference was a change of scenery for his te-night reading?

Finally realizing the absurdity of the situation, he decided to change things up.

The Fawley family library was quite extensive, perhaps not as vast as the Hogwarts library he was about to join, but it contained more books on ancient magic.

This was because the family had become compcent in recent times, no longer delving into magic.

Fortunately, no spendthrifts had emerged, and the family business was thriving, so there was no sign of decline.

Tver left his bedroom, the house quiet save for a few flickering candles in the hallways.

The library wasn't far from his bedroom. Or rather, he had specifically chosen a room close to the library.

Out of the three members of the Fawley family, only he enjoyed reading.

  "Creak."

The library door was rarely opened. Over the past two years, only Jeff had entered occasionally to clean.

The library was rger than Tver's room, and contained more books. Large and small bookshelves were filled with books of all shapes and sizes.

The room exuded an old book scent, like freshly cut grass, waiting for Tver's return.

There were two types of books here. One type was written in English or Latin, and was pced on the left-hand bookshelf. The other was recorded in ancient runes and pced on the other side.

Tver had finished reading the first type of book two years ago, so his goal today was to read the ancient rune books.

Durmstrang taught ancient runes as a subject, as many dark magic records were written in them.

It could also be said that ancient magic was more powerful and more unrestricted in its usage than modern magic, so it was often considered dark magic.

There were fewer books on this side, and they were noticeably more worn. Some books had lost their covers, revealing their titles, such as—

  "The Four Elements of Magic."

  A peculiar title.

The concept of elements didn't exist in this world. Tver could cast *Aguamenti* or *Incendio*, and their power depended on his understanding of the spells.

In other words, while elements existed, they didn't affect the casting of spells.

The concept of four elements was even more peculiar.

In the eyes of Muggles, the four elements were how the ancient Greeks understood the world, believing that the world was composed of air, water, earth, and fire.

But in the eyes of wizards, that was a naive idea of how ancient wizards tried to understand the essence of magic. This was a compulsory question in Durmstrang's history of magic, something Tver had learned in his first year.

So the fact that this book was here made Tver very curious.

  *You have my attention.*

The book wasn't thick, with only a dozen or so pages.

After pulling the book out, Tver deliberately lit the candles in the library and sat down on the floor.

If the book was nonsense, he would put it back and pick another one.

Opening the first page, he saw that it was written entirely in ancient runes, and surrounded by a magical aura.

It wasn't that ancient runes could store magic for so long, that was impossible, that had long expired.

The magic here was because some ancient runes had the effect of absorbing magic, which would absorb his magic when Tver was reading and protect the book from being damaged.

That was why ancient rune books could be preserved for so long.

Of course, this protection had its limits.

Tver shook his head and flipped through the knowledge of ancient runes in his mind.

Because it didn't improve his strength much, he wasn't very skilled in this area, only using it as a tool for reading.

Fortunately, the content above wasn't complicated.

"The release of any magic is based on four principles: magical power, form transformation, sustained effect and release speed."

"Magical power, called earth, nothing in the world is more heavy than the vast earth. The earth under your feet is no longer a constraint, but your loyal servant, every spell cast carries the weight of the earth."

"Form transformation, called water, water has no fixed form, all in one thought. There are endless changes in magic, and the various forms of transformation are like water for you to shape, as long as you are willing, fire like water, earth like wind, all are under your control."

"Continuous effect, called fire, the fire of the soul, endless life. Those who achieve this level are no longer bound by the body, possessing an almost permanent soul."

"Release speed, called wind, everything moves with the wind, goes with the heart. Those who reach the extreme in this aspect can activate their thinking a hundred times over, returning to the essence of magic."

This was the first time Tver had seen this kind of theory.

These four principles are like the foundation of magic, and all four aspects depend on the wizard's understanding of a spell.

The deeper one's understanding of magic is, the more the release speed, form transformation, duration and magical power are improved simultaneously.

No one had ever thought of separating these four foundations and improving them individually, that would be a pure waste of time.

But according to this book, mastering one of the key points could improve one aspect of all spells, without needing to understand individual spells.

It was as if you knew that 1 plus 1 equals 2, and naturally understood that A plus A equals 2A.

But the problem was, 1 and A were different in magic!

With curiosity, Tver continued to turn the page.

However, the following content didn't give an expnation, nor did it say how to break the difference in understanding between different magics.

It basically introduced the power of these four aspects, and mentioned that after reaching the extreme of the four aspects, one could break the shackles of time and space and become a god wandering the world.

Tver immediately lost interest, and basically judged that this was a nonsense book, filled with ancient wizards' shallow knowledge of magic.

If it were given to the history of magic professor, it could probably become an exam question, but for him, it wasn't even worth reading for entertainment.

Yawning, he regretted wasting his time on this book and thought it would be better to go back to sleep.

Standing up, he rubbed his sore thighs. The candles on the table had gone out at some point, and the sunlight from the window shone in, covering the room with a golden gauze.

  But Tver felt a chill.

He clearly remembered that he had only read one page carefully, and skimmed the rest. There was no way it could have taken him the whole night!

"Master?" Jeff opened the door to the study at this time, smiling happily when he saw Tver.

"I didn't see you in your room, so I came over to take a look and sure enough you were in the study, but you must pay attention to your health—"

"Jeff, what time is it?" Tver searched his memory, which was easy for a master of Legilimency.

Jeff was stunned for a moment. "It's seven o'clock in the morning. I get up at this time every day."

  Eight hours.

He spent eight hours reading only one page of the book.

The st time he had this feeling was when his mind was controlled by his professor.

At that time, his thinking was incredibly slow, but the knowledge taught by the professor was deeply imprinted in his mind, as if he had been born with that magic.

His brain had been controlled again!

Tver picked up the book again.

The title above hadn't changed, but there was a line below it.

"This is a valuable resource that I will study for the rest of my life. I leave this line in anticipation of the next person who can understand. —Rowena Ravencw."
