11: Charles 3

“It… hurts…” I heave, moans of pain escaping my mouth.

I am lying on the ground next to the last Cresclin I killed, contorting in pain. The pain doesn’t even come from an injury the fucker inflicted to me; They can’t even hurt me anymore anyway. I’m too strong for them.

No, I’m in pain because of the serious repercussions the system warned me of.

  …

I have been continuing my hunts for 6 days now. Each day I found less monsters, but they were all level 3. Today, I found only one of them, and now comes another one.

It is huge, at least twice the size of a normal one, 2 heads taller than myself. It’s in the middle of the street 5 meters away, its back facing me and a pole in its hands. It doesn’t look like he noticed me yet...

“Alright. It looks like the boss. Maybe if I kill it the city will be free.” I tell myself. “Time to shine and live up even more to my hero title.”

I grip my fists tight and check one last time my status to confirm my skills.

Nothing happened to me since the strange notification about repercussions so I was thinking it was for nothing, but seeing how close I am from 20% in the Beast case… It might even be my last fight, I guess.

Steeling my resolve, I charge towards the Giant Creslin, aiming my fist towards its knees.

However, the grey creature heard my charge and swung its pole weapon towards my head.

I duck at the last moment, missing my target some centimeters and punching what would be it’s tibia instead.

“Looks like you are much more intelligent than your kin, eh? This will be a thrilling fight.” I say out loud, more to myself.

“Human…” To my surprise, the creature answers me with barely intelligible sounds. “Evil… Die!”

As it screams, the monster raises its pole high, and swings it down brutally, aiming at me.

With no time to think, I roll forward. I end up near its crotch. Tentatively, thinking it's a male with its low voice, I kick between his two legs.

A loud screech coming from it, him, confirms my suspicions. He lowered his guard.

Thanks to this, I manage a karate chop unto his lowered head, somehow drawing blood.

His crotch is also bleeding, my blows always seem to do this effect since I finished my Gruesome Hero path.

The beast is now stunned and I take advantage of his handicap to continue my assault.

After some other Kicks and Karate Chops, the monster falls. And I do too.

  …

  “It… Hurts…” I heave.

My whole body is hurting like it was completely burning then freezing just after. All my senses are overwhelmed by the pain and noises. The noises are like a mix of a low buzz, chatter and faraway roars.

And then, everything stops. No more noise, no pain, nothing. Just darkness.

And then, I start to see a purple light in the distance. The light is getting closer slowly.

Then, I notice the light is like a fuzzy ball, at some part of the sphere, there is something akin to patches of fur. The light comes from here but I have no clue what it is or why I am seeing it. Is it God? An angel? The System Administrator?

Having just the time to think that, the ball disappears and all the pain and noise comes back.

I feel my limbs straining on themselves, my ears burn. My hands are hurting like hell, as if someone was pulling on them, but the pain is multiplied by 100.

My skull feels like it’s being crushed by a thousand elephants.

It is so painful I’m not even able to scream anymore.

  …

I wake up to such a message. It would seem that I passed out because of the pain of the System’s repercussions.

I look around myself, now sitting. I notice that the Creslin Chief is still here, now rotting.

“It…” I cough, my throat sore and dry, trying to talk out loud. “It... says I am now... a Goblin?”

I try to stand up, having to try numerous times because of vertigo coming over whenever I’m halfway through.

“You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain, eh?”

Looking around me, I notice something strange, the world is now bigger. Or more like I am now smaller, I’m now around 50 centimeters smaller, something around 130cm or so.

“So Goblins really are smaller than Humans, eh? At least, I got some stats thanks to this transformation. Status.”

“Eh? So it replaced Human with Goblin… Wait!! I lost 1020 Dark Aspect?! But I still got 20% Beast?”

And with such a message, where the Creslin Chief corpse rots, the earth parts and a blue-grey obelisk grow from there. It is riddled with strange runes glowing of an electric blue light.

  “Are you fucking kidding me?”
