Chapter Thirty-Four: Initiate Status

Evan drew a steady breath and reached inward.

  The response came immediately.

Something aligned inside his awareness, a quiet structural shift. The interface did not burst into view. It assembled itself piece by piece with the calm precision of a mechanism that had always existed and had merely been waiting for permission.

  Lines formed first.

Clean edges of pale light arranged themselves into ordered panels floating just beyond his sightline. They did not obscure the room. The table, the walls, the token in his hand all remained visible through them, as if the system understood the difference between information and obstruction.

A header settled at the top.

Below it a structured list appeared.

Evan studied the layout without touching anything.

The interface waited the way a book waits for someone to open it.

He started with the first line.

  EVENT LOG

The panel expanded the moment he focused on it.

A new window unfolded downward, entries ordered with timestamps.

  EVENT LOG

  Evan leaned forward slightly.

  He read it twice.

The explanation removed something sharp inside him. The misroute had not been deliberate.

  A mechanical failure.

  A very large one.

  He sat back.

The system had recorded his actions with complete neutrality.

  He closed the panel.

  TRIAL RECORD

  He opened the next section.

The interface shifted slightly, presenting the information in a more formal structure.

  TRIAL RECORD

Evan felt his jaw tighten slightly.

  He closed the panel.

  JUDGEMENT RECORD

The next section opened with the same clean authority he remembered from the void

  JUDGEMENT RECORD

He closed the judgment panel slowly.

  COMPENSATION LEDGER

  The next section unfolded.

This one looked almost like an administrative receipt.

  COMPENSATION LEDGER

  He closed the panel.

If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

  TRIAL REWARD

  The next section opened.

  TRIAL REWARD

  He considered that carefully.

The system had given him resistance against being overwritten by constructs like the one in the village.

  It was not immunity.

  It was a foothold.

  He closed the panel.

  REGISTRATION AUTHORITY

  CORE STATUS

  The interface shifted again.

  A clean character sheet appeared.

  CORE STATUS

His eyes moved slowly over the numbers.

  Fifty points.

The system had reset everything as he was told.

  STAT TABLE

  The next panel opened automatically.

  STAT TABLE

Evan saw click to expand, and clicked on all one by one.

  Separate, rather plain texts appeared.

  He leaned back slightly.

  Interesting.

Which meant magic was not something he could use yet.

The system expected him to develop first.

  That made sense.

  He closed the panel.

  SKILL REGISTRY

This was the section he had been waiting for.

  It expanded slowly.

  SKILL REGISTRY

He clicked one by one again and carefully went through them.

  Useful.

After going through all of it thoroughly he closed the registry and opened next panel.

  PASSIVE SYSTEM FUNCTION

Next, Evan clicked on Token Interface.

  TOKEN INTERFACE

Then as if confirming his completion of list, it minimized and a System Notice appeared.

Then, his status appeared before him as the interface condensed it into a single section.

  Evan let the interface stay.

Survival had carried him this far.

Now he would have to learn how to live here.
