Chapter 25: You/Me

  [New note]

  [Fatal Error - Save State #8]

  [The player "Abel Cyrus" alongside "Kaelen Clader" enter the big top in the town center and were transported outside of the world, resulting in both of them being outside of {REDACTED}. Dying outside of {REDACTED} forced a {System} reboot which failed. A hard reboot was forced and the Soul Data of "Abel Cyrus" and "Kaelen Calder" was located. Due to heavy corruption detected in these Souls, the salvageable data fragments were merged resulting in the original "Abel" and "Kaelen"s' minds merging into a single Soul. The corrupted data of these Souls is being recovered, but until this data can be recovered and reinstalled "You" will be neither "Abel" nor "Kaelen" nor "both". "You" are you. Do not die outside of {Death Watcher} or {The Sigil of Resurrection} again, as another fatal error may corrupt the {System} itself.]

  That's right... The big top, the tunnel, and the invisible thing that stabbed me to death.... No... They stabbed Abel to death I- I'm not... Kaelen. I'm Abel. I- No. No no no. I'm not Abel. I'm not Kaelen. Who am I? I remember being Kaelen. I remember Talyndra and Ela and going broke. I remember being Abel. I remember Madlyn and Transmigrating and everything. What does that make me? Who does that make me?

  The [System] is recovering the me that was "Abel" and the me that was "Kaelen"... What am I if I am not either of them? Who...? Who would know who I am? Talyndra... Ela... They're missing... They're missing! Lumex I forgot! I forgot what I had been trying to do before I died! For the sake of simplicity, this is the body of Kaelen Calder, and the real Kaelen isn't here right now. But I am what he became, so for now, I am Kaelen.

  Kaelen: So, do you have a better plan? We clearly can't go back into that Big Top. Though we definitely have to deal with it at some point.

  ... No answer... Right... I am both of them. The other is gone, for now at least.

  He would have to come up with a plan by himself. There were two lose ends available to him, the Big Top, and the Perimeter. He couldn't go back to the Big Top just yet, not after what happened. But if he went back to the Perimeter he was likely to die. Two lose ends, but only really one choice, he would have to go back to the Perimeter.

  He had work to do. It didn’t take him long after having fully read the letter to have Blazed everything in the house, obtaining enough Lux to fuel his legs and lungs enough to sprint the entire way back to the Perimeter, trying to keep the same angle and path that they- he had taken to get from there back to the city itself. He'd have to remember how his previous fight with Brother Green went, and then dodge the attack that killed him last time.

  Brother Green: Welcome to the Perimeter, Calder, I am Brother Green. I must say, I am surprised that you managed to find us at this Outpost.

  Kaelen: Don't be. I've been here before.

  Brother Green: This is not the Outpost you were at last time.

  Kaelen: I had guessed. I've been to this one before.

  Let's see what I can remember. Duck and cut, weave and dice, cut below, Fabricate crossbow and fire, manifest spears, close the distance, swap out for a large axe and cut down the trees, jump at Brother Green and swing the axe- now!

  Brother Green went to kick him, he quickly moved to the side, dodging, before manifesting a dagger and driving it into Brother Green's neck.

  [Brother Green - Health Points: 457/457 (-1) -> 456/457]

  From what he could tell, Brother Green was supplementing his defense with tree bark armour, and somehow Brother Green's tree bark was stronger than the metals in his weapons. However it wasn't all the tree bark, he had managed to chop down the trees earlier after all. There had to be some way to deal with it. What was different between the trees and the shield? If he could figure that out he could deal with the armour. Kaelen stood up, the only difference he could think of was that the trees' tree bark was attached to the trees, and the shield was just the bark, but if it was that then there was nothing he could do about Brother Green's armour, and that would hopefully decrease his defense, allowing Kaelen to actually deal some proper damage.

  [Notice: Death imminent]

  -! He hadn't been paying attention to Brother Green, he-! Brother Green hit him straight in the stomach, piercing him all the way through.

  His mind snapped into place and his eyes shot open as he gasped for breath and began to pant.

  Kaelen: *pant* Damn...

  He really had no other choices though. He wasn't being offered any missions, and he couldn't deal with the Big Top first as he didn't want to cause another error so soon... He would just have to suffer.

  Get to Brother Green, repeat his actions in the previous Save State- Stab Brother Green in the neck.

  [Brother Shade - Health Points: 457/457 (-1) -> 456/457]

  And then immediately let go of the knife and kick away to avoid the punch. He hadn't done anything about Brother Shade's armour so even if he hit he wouldn't do much damage, but he charged at Brother Green anyways, Fabricating a sword out of the shadow material he had used to survive the sun earlier using his Sigil and swinging it at Brother Green. The sword just phased through him, doing absolutely nothing-

  [Notice: Death imminent]

  A tree pierced his neck, killing him.

  Repeat actions, dodge what killed him last time, continue. He had guessed the shadow sword probably wouldn't do anything, but it was worth a try. He tried to make a new weapon, only to feel a sword get thrust through his torso. He dropped everything and stared down, Brother Green was holding a sword made of the tree bark and had stabbed Kaelen with it.

  [Death Watcher, Level 14 (+1) -> Death Watcher, Level 15]

  Again. Repeat actions, dodge, get a bit further, do a small amount of extra damage-

  [Death Watcher, Level 15 (+1) -> Death Watcher, Level 16]

  Again.

  [Notice: Skills leveled up]

  [Death Watcher, Level 16 (+1) -> Death Watcher, Level 17]

  Again. It was his third time dodging the tree bark sword when he realised something, hesitating, causing him to die earlier than the previous two attempts.

  [Notice: Skills leveled up]

  [Death Watcher, Level 17 (+1) -> Death Watcher, Level 18]

  This time, when he came up to Brother Green he had a plan. A real plan.

  Brother Green: W-

  Kaelen: "Welcome to the Perimeter, Calder, I am Brother Green. I must say, I am surprised that you managed to find us at this Outpost." That's what you were going to say, right?

  Brother Green: ... Curious... Future sight?

  Kaelen: I wish it was future sight. That would be so much easier. You know, Brother Green? You've killed me 7 times. That's more than I died the whole time whilst trying to pass the first Event, well done you. But I think I've figured you out, or at least figured out how to kill you. Each time we fight you bring out a sword made from that tree bark material you use for armour when we get deeper into our fight. Well, I've just remembered the exact definition of my second Sigil, [The Sigil of Weaponry].

  He reaches inwards, towards his core and his spine, activating his Sigil, manifesting the very sword he had been killed with twice, made from the seemingly indestructible tree bark originating from Brother Green's Sigil.

  Brother Green: W-what? How did you?

  Kaelen, smiling: So. It works. Meaning-!

  Brother Green wasn't able to do anything as hundreds of spears, spikes, and swords made of refined and compressed tree bark shot out of the ground, piercing him from every direction, shattering his armour, and piercing straight through his flesh.

  [Brother Green - Health Points: 457/457 (-300) -> 157/457]

  [Stamina Points: 402/402 (-200) -> 202/402]

  Brother Green: -D-da-mn...

  His blood trailed down the hundreds of weapon shafts and blades, he was no longer able to move away as Kaelen moved closer and closer to him, brandishing the sword he made.

  Kaelen: I died so many times to you. And yet, it was this easy to kill you. Simply by using your own material against you. I admit, you have disappointed me Brother Green.

  Kaelen holds the sword up to Brother Green's neck and swings it, cutting the head clean off.

  [Brother Green - Health Points: 157/457 (-157) -> 0/457]

  Kaelen: Goodbye Brother Green.
