Chapter 3: The Rebel, Willow Umbra

The sound hummingbirds buzzing near the window is always a delightful way of starting the morning, or at least in Willow's book it is. Her parents had recently gifted her a hummingbird feeder for her 14 birthday. Anyone who knew her well could tell you how much she liked them; however, her parents were shocked when she asked for this gift.

Willow slumped out of bed, bored by the thought of going to school. She wanted to explore, heading to somewhere new. There was a shopping center near her bus stop, and that is when she got an Idea. If she could just act like she was taking the bus to school, then she could go out and live a little. She would need some money of course, but her parents wealth made losing a 50 dollar bill seem like dropping a penny and being too lazy to pick it up. It's not like they were awake in the morning, and they didn't pay the house maid enough to care about watching over their wallet. The only problem is her parents would be alerted that she was missing from school, although the school normally calls the maid. The maid was always home, and Willow got home before her parents did. If she could delete the message, then the maid would never find out. If the maid never finds out, then nobody could tell her parents.

Willow's plan was going swimmingly: she had money, a way to escape punishment, and a couple of ours out in the real world. She could go to the supermarket, but she really wanted to go somewhere foreign. She wanted to go somewhere forbidden. Across from the supermarket was a hole in the wall. A place not exactly fancy, but not as unprofessional as a fast food place. She headed there, mouth watering from the idea of a juicy stake; however, when she got there the shop keeping lady didn't let her in.

Shopkeeper: "Get lost kid, go back to school."

Willow: "Y'know... School is actually closed today. It's a teacher's work day, and I have money."

Shopkeeper: "Really... So it's a teacher's work day on a Tuesday... If I let you buy something, will you go back to school?"

  Willow: "Promise."

Just like that, Willow got her stake and left. Willow was never one to break a promise, so she decided to head to school. She wanted to take a short cut, seeing as it was already noon. While on a dirt path she had taken about a dozen times before, but this time the road was closed for construction. She, not wanting to back track, decided to go around the road block. As she walked deeper into the woods, it became apparent that she had taken a wrong turn somewhere. Now she wasn't sure where she was, and it was already getting dark. By the first hour she was biting her nails and shaking a little, after the second hour her fingers were bleeding as she could feel her heart pumping loudly. By the time the sun had completely set and the moon was rising, she had somehow ended up near a casino.

Willow walked towards the casino, hoping that one of the strangers would let her use their phone to call home. She didn't care about getting in trouble anymore, she just wanted someone to come for her. That is when she saw something. A brief case money was laying on the floor, and lying next to it was an unconscious man. Willow rushed over to check the mans vitals until she was stopped by a man that toward over her.

  Man: "Hey kid. Beat it."

Willow was shocked, thinking this man must be stealing the unconscious guy's cash. She, not knowing what to do, grabbed the brief case. If she could bring it to the police, then maybe they could use it as evidence. Worst case scenario she would be leading the threat away from the threatened, and that is exactly what happened. The man chased after her, his footsteps getting closer by the minute. Her heart was racing faster than it had ever in her life, and her legs were about to give out any minute. Then all of a sudden the steps stopped, Willow checked over her shoulder to see what had happened. A third man had stepped in, punching the other guy in the face before also taking off in a different direction than Willow. Willow ran as far as she through the woods she emerged from earlier. After she tripped, she passed out.

Once she woke up again, the sun was beginning to rise again. The sounds of hummingbirds in the flowers nearby is what awoke her. She struggled to stand, and once she did everything hit her at once. Although yesterday's events were awful, there was one shining beam of light. That man that had saved her was her hero, and without him she would have been caught. She walked around a little bit, thinking why someone like him would help out a total stranger. She wasn't sure if even her parents would have done the same as that man.

The thoughts took most of her attention, so she didn't notice the ground was getting bumpy. Her foot got caught, causing her to trip. Before she could hit the ground, a rift in space opened up and swallowed her whole.
