Chapter 22: The Truth of Orlier

09.33 cycle fifteen, Ca’thir, of calendar Moonrachia

3 days before the day I will be executed…

Tell me, who doesn’t feel anxious if they know that they're going to die in a few days?

And there’s no sign or even news of Noah. Does he even remember he has a home to return to?

“I don’t want this and that.” As Alias points toward the tomato and lettuce

“You need to eat them if you want to grow up faster.” I just ignored her and kept putting them on our sandwiches

She was standing on a chair while I was preparing our sandwiches

“Really?” Alias is looking at me with narrowed eyes

  “Really—really.”

The sandwich that usually doesn’t take a long time to make now takes much longer with Alias here

I made sure to cut the ingredients with the knife far away from her before putting them in front of me, but often some of them disappear or… well, are eaten by her

So it's taking twice or three times longer than usual

After a while, I finally finished making the sandwich after God knows how long it took and put it in the basket

“Alright, let’s wash our hands first.” Slowly, I carried her back to the ground

And then both of us walk toward the kitchen sink. I placed the chair back and lifted her there

A soft flow of water could then be heard when Alias started washing her hands

  “Wash your hands correctly.”

“Hmph, I know it without you telling me to.”

When I let out a heavy sigh, I can’t help but think that these past few days, I had become physically and mentally exhausted, taking care of Alias

It had only been a few days, yet I felt like I would die of exhaustion before even being executed

If I survived judgment day, I would definitely choose a child-free marriage later

Then Alias showed her hand in front of me. “How is it?” With a few droplets of water still dripping off them, “See? I can do it properly.”

“Mhm, it’s clean enough.” As I dried her hand with a kitchen towel

Then I carried her to the ground slowly, after that, I grabbed a glass for each of us and a pitcher filled with milk

Then we head toward the backyard

These past few days, despite how demanding Alias was and how tired I have become, it has put my mind at ease

For Rheya, she seems calmer now after Maya told her that Noah could free me, but I wonder if she knows the real chances of it?

And for Maya, she’s so busy that you could only see her early in the morning or late at night

It might be selfish of me, but I do enjoy these past few days a lot. I really feel grateful for them

But I know this won’t last long

These past few days, Alias seems unable to fall asleep and doesn’t want to be left alone

Because of that, I spend almost every hour I have babysitting her

From the day she knocked on my door until the night she fell asleep after telling some stories from the earth

I may not be able to change the past, but I could wish the best future for her

Even if I didn’t believe in God, I still prayed to any of them for her future

It's just how serious I am about wanting her to be happy

When I was strolling around the house, the emptiness of the rooms slowly filled my thoughts, the pale light that poured down from the outside through the windows

The echoes of my step and how I could hear my own breath

It wasn’t only Alias that couldn’t sleep, but I also couldn't sleep

That’s why sometimes I met Maya when she went home late at night

Hearing footsteps coming from the first floor, I headed straight there to greet her

But the moment I arrived there

It wasn’t Maya, a tall man with soft brown hair and a gentle smile that never changed, it was Noah

  …And Kiara?

“It’s been a while, right, Kaleth?” As he steps inside and pats my shoulder, “I know you have a ton of questions, so let’s head into my office first, so let’s head into my office first.”

When all of us were heading there, I could feel how thin Noah's mana is, as if he could vanish into thin air at any moment

The moment we stepped inside his office, it was… a mess. I can’t even say it was a proper office, it’s more like a library with tons of paper and books scattered around

“Honestly, I don’t know where to start.” As Noah sat on one of the couches, “So, Kiara, could you prepare us something to drink? Thank you.”

After looking around the office, I slowly took a seat on the side of his couch, and then the door closed in a soft click as Kiara disappeared somewhere

“To put it simply, we’re a@#$ng%el.” The moment Noah said the last word, his voice distorted, as if all of the words themselves tangled up together into one character

“Hmm, I guess it still gets censored as usual.” And Noah just shrugged it off

“How do I say it? We’re the entity that comes from beyond this plane. Remember the ancient era? When beings descended into this world?”

“That’s what Eisya and my identity are.” The way he explains it, as if it were all a normal thing, like breathing

… I don’t even know what to say or how to react properly to all of that. Am I looking at him, shocked? Was my breath stopped? Honestly, I don’t even know

“It’s an angel, right…?” The word somewhat came out normally, and then Noah just nodded, “But how come you can’t say it properly?

“That’s another long story, even I don’t know much about it. I’ve been trying to research all of the possibilities and can’t even conclude it.”

I see… So all of these papers and books aren’t a work-related thing but research?

“And… I can’t live much longer.” Slowly, a mana gathered around Noah and manifested a broken halo, it's so broken that it doesn’t even look like a halo anymore

It’s more like a broken glass that was scattered into pieces that somewhat looked like a halo

“Unlike humans, our sources of power aren’t limited to mana alone but also a prayer of people and something like that, but the moment the he@#ven got sealed up, we lost them, and our existence gradually faded.”

“That’s also one of the reasons why we used the human body, because it’s much simpler to create and to maintain our identity over a long time. Well, it's not exactly a human body in a literal sense, but nevertheless, it's still considered as one.”

It’s too much, there’s too much information to take in at the moment. My brain is struggling to process it all

“… Do Maya and Kiara know? Or are there other people who know it?”

“Only Kiara knows it at the moment, for Maya, she might get some ideas, but not fully. Also, hold out your hand.”

Honestly, I don’t know what he’s trying to do, and I'm kind of afraid that he might do something stupid, but slowly, I extended my hand

“Do you remember what I said before? That we’re capable of creating a human body, right?” Then I could feel a sting on my finger and my blood spilling over to his palm

Slowly, his face and body structure changed… and Noah somewhat turned into me…?

“This is the plan to save you from execution. I will take your place while you run away from here with a different identity. Easy enough, right?”

He said that with my face, the way he wears his usual smile on it, and saying it with my own voice… is fascinating yet so foreign

“Noah the Arnentia principal and the head of the Orlier family has died on the battlefield.”

“And I’m Kaleth from this moment.”
