"What do you mean proposal?" Hugo asked with a newfound sense of interest.
Deaths shadowy form glided through the misty shadowy realm it's scythe scraping the non existent ground.
Hugo despite lacking any limbs or a body, suddenly felt an intense, tingling sensation over his entire being flowing into his very core.
Suddenly Hugos body returned to him this time into a spectral form, it was there, it was certainly was there, he was now wearing the same black raincoat and black track pants he wore on the night of his demise, his plain monotonous features one could easily forget in a crowd were back, his grey eyes back, his black hair was back too.
"Huh, that felt...odd, oh would you look at that my bodies back." Hugo nodded with approval and a small grin appeared on his face as he looked at the palm of his hand and a wave of satisfaction swept through him.
Hugo and began feeling his face and brushing his hair back.
"So you're some sort of God, Im guessin? Maybe not the big man himself, but I don't know...maybe some other?"
Hugo calmly looked up at death, he scurried forward to walk beside deaths gliding form.
"I'm not a God or a Goddess or even a deity as a matter of fact." Death stated not even looking in Hugo's direction, it simply just stared ahead into the black void like world they were in.
Hugos expression changed to that of bewilderment and slight confusion.
“Seriously?” Hugo tilted his head, a smirk tugging at his lips. “Aren’t you supposed to be omnipotent, omniscient, all-knowing and all that jazz?”
"I am but a universal force of nature. I do not create, nor am I worshipped. Across countless worlds of the multiverse, no mortal offers me devotion by choice." [Death]
Hugos eyes widened slightly at the implication and only seemed to get more intrigued and perplexed.
"Multiple universes huh? Now thats a plot twist I certainly didn't expect."
"Say, how old are you?" Hugo curiously asked, his head tilted up to look up at death.
Deaths skeletal head looked down upon Hugo and it replied in a monotonous tone as if it were stating a universal rule.
As old as existence, maybe older, but if i'm going to be honest I stopped counting after I realised how vain that sounded, as I am going to be at my occupation eternally.
Hugo chuckled to himself, a bit amused now.
"Anyways enough about me, It's time we discuss matters about you and to further address my proposition."
"Let's talk about your...life when you were among the living Mr Lennox, I know I previously stated your obnoxiously high kill count before, however i'd like to address your character and influence among the living world."
Hugo felt a slither of surprise and a bit of irritation at the statement.
"Go on." Hugo chuckled nervously, then replied his tone taking on a slightly amused and curious one.
Death raised its boney finger, with a small deliberate circular motion, the dark shadowy void-like world shimmered, and strangely, a formal seating arrangement had dropped silently into existence.
Hugos eyes widened slightly.
"Oh, well thats new."
Death glided to the end of the table where it sat down on a rigid, high-backed chair right in front of the dark wooden table currently facing Hugos direction.
Hugo sat down infront of death.
"So, you were saying? talking about my life when I was alive?"
Death held out the boney palm of his right hand and in it appeared out of the thin air, a large brown leather book with Hugo's full name at the front cover.
Death opened to the first page.
"Your story is quite the fascinating tale, Mr Lennox, born to a middle class family, no siblings, not only that but a stable environment and no long term health issues or disabilities."
Death continued its narration in its cold, indifferent tone.
"However, your parents are partial to blame towards the dark path you took."
Hugos eyes narrowed slightly and a small grin appeared on his face.
"Alright you caught my interest, lets see how well that book of yours really knows me."
"Well I can barely call those mortals parents as they spent most of their time working and even the days when they were off they typically spent it drinking with their colleagues."
This narrative has been purloined without the author's approval. Report any appearances on Amazon.
Hugos eyes widened further with intrigue.
Death continued its narration.
"You're Grandfather worked for the notorious Carvetti family a mafia organization that rose to power and dominated the city you lived in."
Hugos mind raced with thoughts of alarm.
"You're grandfather noticed how lifeless you seemed and so he used that as an excuse to give you purpose."
Hugo stared up into deaths cold void like cowl.
Death gazed back at Hugo impassively its dark shadowy hooded figure casting an ominous aura.
"Is that judgement I sense?" Hugo asked with a sense of slight sense of amusement.
"Mr Lennox I'm not as vain as to quarrel about a mortal such as yourselves, life choices."
Death replied in its typical calm monotonous tone.
"As I was saying."
"One of your most noticeable murders was at the age of 18."
Hugo went silent, he watched death with an impassive gaze, he then spoke aloud with a firm tone.
"I was being payed a large sum of money."
"I remember that day when I came to reap that poor fellow, you did quite the number on him, 4 broken ribs, a shattered knee and a broken shoulder, and lastly a shattered windpipe."
Hugo began to tire at deaths narrations and then retorted.
"So, what's the point in this? Are you trying to torment me? Make me feel sympathy?
He let out a humorless, mocking chuckle at the reaper.
Death remained unmoved, unfazed at the provokation.
"Were going over your life to...reflect for the proposition I have planned."
Hugo sighed.
"Get to the point, we all wanna move on."
Death silently stared at Hugo before taking a deep whispery breath and then exhaling.
"Mr Lennox the point is you were a controversial figure back in the land of the living."
"You were responsible for the death of over 200 men and women."
"Not only that but you were responsible for burglaries, participation in countless Loan-sharking collections, transportation of illegal contraband, smuggling as well as acting as an enforcer for black-market deals."
"Let's also not forget to include the arson and vandalism you commited."
Hugo remained calm and collected his gaze never leaving deaths hollow eyes, and for the first time in his whole entire life, he grimaced.
Death continued.
"Majority of the individuals your slaughtered in the pursuit of wealth and purpose were all crime affiliated and guilty themselves, however this raises the question Mr Lennox, would you have done the same to a innocent person."
Hugo raised his eyebrow and retorted.
"Aren't you omniscient?"
Death laughed,a dry, rasping laugh that escaped its cowl.
Hugo felt a shiver down his spine.
"Im testing your self awareness, I am already aware of the countless infinite responses that are capable of being said by you, however, I am simply curious as to what you in this very instance would answer."
Hugo stopped, he stared up at the black abyss like sky.
He pondered for a while, it was a question he himself had wondered about.
"Maybe." Hugo replied in an unsure tone.
"Keeping things vague? I'll respect that for now."
"Lastly, I have a proposition for you."
Hugo raised his eyebrow a sense of intrigue washed over him.
"Go on."
"There is a tournament that occurs between all Deities."
Hugo's expressions only grew more and more intrigued by the second.
"Explain." Hugo questioned.
"The divine games are a tournament held every century in various other worlds and especially the world i'm about to transport you too."
Hugo only grew more intrigued by the second.
"The games involve a champion or people commonly referred to as 'otherworlders', people summoned to another world by a God,Goddess, eldritch entity or even a primal concept such as myself."
"And what might be the goal of these games?" Hugo questioned with narrowed eyes.
"The goal is commonly, 'KILL THE DEMON LORD UNDER ANY MEANS NECESSARY'".
"Demon lord?, the big bad evil demon." Hugo questioned with a slight snicker at the absurdity.
"No, not just demons various other races created by the creator are all common candidates to becoming demons lords."
"So you want me to be your...hitman?" Hugo asked slighted amused at the thought of working for the grim reaper himself."
Death silently nodded.
Hugo chuckled and questioned.
"Are you offering me a contract?"
Hugos expression grew puzzled
"Why?" Hugo asked a tone of complete bewilderment showing.
"I want to test the boundaries of your free will."
Hugo raised an eyebrow as if slightly perplexed, before suddenly sighing and shaking his head.
"Okay I don't care anymore, say what happens if I were to refuse this offer."
Hugo struggled to read deaths expression but then...it responded back in a monotonous, clear indifferent tone.
"I'll simply reincarnate you into another world—one in a constant state of war where chaos is the only thing that exists. I will also wipe your memories of your previous life."
"Hold on a minute, that aint no offer thats a command."
"These are simply the cosmic consequences of your actions, you lived a life as a murder laden soul whilst fulling knowing your actions were wrong."
"Your grandfather may have raised you into a life of crime but you were the one who fully knew of the dangers and issues of that world, after a while you started to enjoy the life of crime, not because of the cruelty but simply because you seemed to lack purpose and...you enjoyed the thrill of being above the law."
Hugo stared up at deaths cowl he silently contemplated.
"Now I perfectly understand I wasn't an upstanding role model of a human, however isn't it a bit unfair to just up and toss me into the fiery depths of hell considering I was raised into crime at the age of 15?"
Hugo shot back in an attempt to prove some sort of innocence.
Death remained unfazed and unbothered by the futile attempt at proving innocence.
"And yet we both know that you knew what type of life you'd be leading, you're grandfather may have been a vile crude and sadistic man but overall you knew deep down what you were doing was morally wrong."
"So Mr Lennox, why is it so complicated to understand why i'm warning you about what can happen if you refuse my offer, i'm simply upholding the cosmic law that was installed by the creator of existence."
Hugo sighed.
Death stated in a monotonous tone once more.
I told you before Mr Lennox, I hate putting people permanently in the afterlife, reincarnation is significantly more efficient.
Hugos eyes widened with surprise and his face contorted into that of awe.
Death nodded.
"I prefer not to most of the time and choose not to most of the time, however when you internally mentioned the term "afterlife" I couldn't hold myself back from responding to it."
"But anyways Hugo, enough about the afterlife and eternal damnation, I need to know your answer."
Death tilted its cowl to look down at Hugo.
"Do you accept my offer and wish to become my divine champion, Mr Lennox?"
Death offered its boney hand in a polite handshake gesture.
Hugo looked down at the hand with a sense of awkwardness.
He looked up into deaths cowl then gripped the reapers boney hand and shook it.
"I accept your offer."
