Sunshine beamed down onto his face as Chet woke up. It was his nephew's system day tomorrow, and he promised to take him to the woods to find his talent.
Chet reminds himself of his system day as he packs their supplies: a bow, arrows and a hunting spear. He had so much hope, maybe he would get a hunting trait or a merchant trait and feed his dog, Orhol, steak every day. Worst-case scenario he gets a farming trait like the rest of his family. Never in a million years could he guess.
He would get nothing. Normally, you get traits based on your talents, but Chet despite being one of the most talented axe users got nothing. Everyone assumed he would get the Axe-Thrower trait or maybe the Woodworker trait.
He got nothing, but a broken dream. Still, he couldn't complain, much anyway. If he was a noble scion, he would have been kicked off the family or worse honor-killed for tainting the bloodline. They already do that to people with undesirable traits.
Luckily, he was just a farmer's boy in the middle of Ahrail. He lived on his family's farm ever since, his eldest brother's right now. He still worked, and the farm wasn't rich enough to let someone sack off.
“Uncle” Ariel's voice cried out as he was lost in thought. Chet looked out on the barn side, somehow he didn't notice he walked all the way to the other side of the farm.
Off in the direction of the forest, was his nephew his favorite one in fact, but don't tell him. His head was big enough already.
“Ahh, Arial there you are. I was wondering where you were,” Chet said. He looked out at him, he was a small boy with dark red hair like his great-grandfather. Everyone else in the family had black hair.
His eyes were bright green and his face was full of freckles. He was wearing his system day clothes, a long, black robe with a thin, white cotton shirt and pants. It was the same he wore to his system day as the rest of his family. It was easily the most expensive clothing his family had.
“Are you sure you won't damage those robes?” Chet said questioning,” You know those cost 45 Eliral, that's half a harvest worth”.
Arial looked sheepishly back.
“I'm just a little excited,” he responded. Chet signed as he understood what it was like at his age.
“Fine, but if you break them you're paying for them,” he warned, "It's not like they don't have enough money to replace them, but he can't get in the habit of breaking expensive things.
“I swear I won't,” Arial promised. To be fair it will be him. Who looks silly if it breaks on his system day.
They then walk off to the forest. It wasn't a large forest by any means, but It was the only one the soldiers of the nobles left alone. There are no valuables there so only the village hunters controlled the native predators there. It should be safe though, the worst thing that could happen is if a fox or wolf attacks them. Bigger predators need bigger prey than the deer and rabbits that live there. Plus, the forest is a low mana zone so no magical attacks to worry about.
“What Trait do you think you're gonna have? Chet asked as they walked to the trail leading to the forest. It was barely used by only the hunters and the occasional herbalist.
“I think I might get an Equitation-Riding trait,” he mentioned,” You know Mother always said I was skilled with Boen,”. Boen is Ariel's favorite horse he would ride on his back to look for rabbits or other vermin eating our crops.
The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
“Hmmm,” Chet resonated,” You are a good rider,” he thought personally he would be more likely to get an animal handling trait as he was equally good at dealing with the sheep or goats.
At this point, trees started getting more common although this close to the trait most trees would be cut for firewood so they were only about 15 feet tall at the highest. Deeper in the canopy would be 30 feet tall. That’s where the deer would be, so they took a right turn.
“Let’s go to the river that’s where Old Afee said he saw a bison,” Ariel said, Chet doubted that a bison was anywhere near this side of the Tolmal River, but he didn’t want to disappoint his nephew.
The river in question was a small one that connects to the main Alyack River in the northeast where the village gets all its water. This part is deeper in and was rarely visited, it is near to where the nearby hills can be seen and as a result the river is filled with rapids.
As we walked deeper in the woods the trees grew larger and the shadow grew deeper. The grass was over a foot tall and ferns as well as bush's appeared. By the time we reached the river the ground was covered entirely with green, and moss climbed all the way to the tops of tree trunks. We were at the base of one of the nearby hills.
The river was loud as water rushed through. The river was about 6 feet wide and it was white filled with air. The banks were lined with pebbles and mossy rocks. We were about a half mile away from the waterfall that feeds it, so the water was moving fast.
“Uncle,” Arial whispered, as he was couching down.”I see a deer over there”.
It was a young buck, since it was summer it didn’t have alters. Chet passed the Bow and an arrow over to Him.
“Here’s your chance," he said as the buck neck reached down for a slip of water and its white neck was clearly visible.
Ariel nocked the arrow as the limbs stretched out aiming at its belly. He relished the arrow and it hit into the ribcage. The deer bleated out as it turned tails and ran off into the wilderness.
“Follow me!” He shouted as they began to chase the deer. It leaped over roots and various brambles in its desperate example. It’s blood got on every bush along the way. they must have run a mile by the time its legs gave up.
The duo were in a clearing as he got the hunting spear and rammed the deer with it, finally killing it.
“Good Job,” Chet said as he panted, “let leave before any wolves caught the scent,”. Arial graded the deer by the hindlegs and lifted it over his shoulders.
“Careful, now,” Chet told him, "You don’t want to get blood all over you,”. It was too late, blood was already on his shirt. It was bad enough, but that’s when they heard a loud roar.
“RAAAEAEAE,” a strange and unnatural roar piece through the trees.
“What was that?” Arial asked, as he dropped the deer's carcass. In front of them emerging from the greenery, was a black cat. Its eyes literally glowed purple, and it had 2 long, bright white teeth that went beyond its chin. It was a Shader, a magical evolution of the panther, it shouldn't be here. They were native to the southern Green Night forest, 2,000 miles away.
“Arial behind me! Now!” Chet yelled, leaving no room for doubt. Shaders use shadow magic to hunt their prey. Fortunately, they were in a magical dead zone with barely any mana in the air.
The Shader leaped at Chet as he got the spear out. It unsheared its sharp, yellow claws as it graded a hold of the tip, and It bit down on the shaft as it snapped it in half. He then swung the remaining part of the spear on the feline as it jumped back out of reach.
Then Arial threw a rock onto its blood-red nose. It hit and caused the cat to roar out in rage.
“RAAAEAEAEEA,”.
“Leave my Uncle alone!” He screamed in defiance. The Panther suddenly had bright white lighting surrounding it’s eyes as it circle aground to the left of chet closer to Arial. It was shockingly fast, unnaturally fast some might have said. Chet rushed forward to stab the beast , but he was too slow. It Sprint towards Ariel as it then bit down on his arm and shoved him on to his back.
“Nooooooo!” Chet raged out, he then raced to his nephew and tacked the ferocious beast off him. He grounded out its eyes in the commotion causing the beast to tear 3 bloody lines through his chest into his belly. It kicked him off him and ran off to the side.
The beast must have some running trait Chet thought it was running circles around us.
“Uncle are you ok!?’ Arail asked with tears in his eyes,”I'm sorry this is all my fault-,”
“No it isn't,” Chet rebuked, “You didn’t know this would happen,”. The panther leaped back at him as he graded the broken remains of the spear and he stabbed him straight in the neck.
“Uncle!” Ariel cried out. The Pather was in its dying throws as it finally died.
“I’m fin-,” He began to say but in front of his eyes.

My system, but how? Chet thought. I thought I would never get my system and yet here it is. My Trait Developer I have never heard of before. It was confusing and was quite shocking.
“Uncle?”Arial asked, with a jot Chet realized he had been ignoring his nephew for the past minute.
“Yes, I'm fine, let's go home and bring the animals with us,” he said, still wondering what this means.
