The Great Han Dynasty Volume 2: The mountain has trees, and the trees have branches. One two eight governs learning.
A bundle of silk and a jade tablet were placed on the top of a safe chariot, the Son of Heaven's envoy welcomed the carriage, the disciples rode in a light carriage following behind, and they passed through the East Market of Chang'an. Passersby stopped their footsteps, gathered together, and discussed, "Who is this noble again, entering Chang'an to go to the Imperial Academy as a teacher?"
Someone who was in the know loudly said with a smile, "You didn't know this? This gentleman is Fu Sheng, who has thoroughly researched the Book of History."
In the past, Li Si advised Qin Shi Huang to burn books. Except for medical, divination and tree planting books, ordinary people were not allowed to privately store the classics of various schools. Fu Sheng was a native of Jinan, and at that time he was a Qin doctor. When he heard about it, he risked his life to hide the "Shangshu" in the wall. More than half a year ago, Emperor Hui announced to the world that except for the law of hiding books, the old Fu Sheng returned to his hometown and dug up the wall to recover 29 complete chapters of "Shangshu".
The people of Chang'an were amazed and exclaimed, "Now that we have a doctor of the Shangshu, I wonder where we will find doctors for the Li, Yi, Er Ya, Huangdi Sijing, and Daodejing?"
In the carriage, Xihe poured a cup of tea and handed it to her father, complaining, "Dad, you're old, why not stay in Jinan to continue writing 'Shangshu' instead of traveling thousands of miles to Chang'an to be a 'Shangshu' doctor?"
"My daughter's family doesn't understand things." Fu Sheng coughed twice and sighed, "Now the Emperor is eager to learn, setting up the Imperial Academy to teach people all over the world, so that people all over the world know the 'Book of History'. Even if the Emperor didn't invite me, I would still risk my life to come to Chang'an this time."
The emperor's intention to establish a doctoral program at Taixue was currently the most popular topic in Chang'an.
In the fourth year of summer, Emperor Hui issued an edict to seek virtuous and talented individuals, ordering local officials to recommend such persons to the imperial court. In the same month, he ordered officials to respectfully invite scholars who were well-versed in classical texts from all over the country, while also establishing a national academy and appointing doctors of various classics to teach and examine candidates for official positions.
As soon as the imperial edict was issued, it stirred up great waves in the hearts of scholars throughout the land.
From now on, if your talent and virtue are renowned in the countryside and you are recommended by a county governor to enter the Imperial Academy. After studying at the Imperial Academy for two years, the Emperor will issue an edict to test everyone. Those who achieve outstanding results will be appointed as officials and enter the Un央 Palace to await orders at the Sima Gate. At any time, they may have the opportunity to approach the Emperor's presence and gain recognition, thus achieving great success. The Chaju system has opened up a new path for them to become officials and govern the country, although this path is narrow and difficult, it is a feasible one.
However, the literary talent of this great Han dynasty has been stifled for too long. At one time, the law of books was abolished, and although everyone in the folk studied, those who were highly respected and could be employed as doctors by the imperial court were really too few. For a time, the seventy-two doctoral system was established, but it couldn't even recruit one-third of the required number.
Xihao Village West of Chang'an
Dr. Mao Heng is lecturing on "The Book of Poetry" in the hall:
"What is called Guan Guan Ju Jiu, in the river's continent." Mao Hen shook his head and said, "Guan Ju, it means the virtue of Ming Hou Fei. The beginning of wind, so as to wind up the world and correct husband and wife..."
"Sir," a young man in blue clothes asked, "I have read 'Guan Ju', it is indeed pleasant and delightful, with the beauty of spring. But isn't it just a poem about love between men and women? Is it not a bit far-fetched to say that it is talking about the virtues of imperial consorts?"
"The child doesn't understand poetry." Mo Hen lowered his face and said, "The Book of Songs has 300 poems. If they were all as simple as their literal meaning, then everyone in the world could read them." He clasped his hands together and said, "Your Majesty, why bother to ask us, the Poetry Doctors, about this? It subtly combines historical events, ancient meanings, and profound intentions. Even if we exhaust our entire lives' effort, we cannot thoroughly research it. How can a child like you dare to speak lightly and profane it?"
"Oh." The weak young man smiled and asked, "Then according to Mr. Yi's words, what kind of virtue does 'Guan Ju' praise the queen for?"
"The Guan Ju says, 'The virtues of the queen are pure and respectful, her conduct is harmonious and gentle. She cultivates virtue in retirement, seeks wisdom in quietude, and attends to her duties with reverence. This is the virtue of a queen. A queen who possesses the virtue of Guan Ju is a chaste and gentle maiden, fit to be the good match for a gentleman. Joyfully obtaining a virtuous maiden to pair with a gentleman, worrying about advancing the worthy, without being licentious in her appearance; sorrowfully thinking of the worthy and talented, yet not harming the heart of goodness. This is the meaning of Guan Ju.'"
This lecture has reached the point where the red sun is about to set.
After dispersing from school, many students walked under the corridor, chatting with each other, and asked, "Just now that Zhang Meng, is he a prince of which vassal state?"
Preparations took less than half a year, and at this time the Imperial Academy was not yet formal, only temporarily teaching in the Doctor's Gallery of the Long'an Western Prefecture. The first batch of students in the Imperial Academy were very few, with a total of no more than 100 people. There were three sources: Each classic doctor could bring 3-5 students to the Imperial Academy; The vassals could send one person as a son; And the governors and magistrates from various places who were recommended.
Because the sons of marquises can directly appoint their sons as Lang, except for some knowledgeable people, the sons of marquises are not willing to suffer this extra hardship for no reason, studying dry classics for two years. It's just that the young man who claimed to be named Zhang Meng earlier was too young, with delicate skin that didn't seem to have undergone hard labor, and his entire demeanor and behavior seemed to come from a noble family. Moreover, his eyebrows and eyes were clear and bright, if not for the fact that his ears weren't pierced, people might have thought he was a woman.
"No." Someone in the room shook his head and said, "I have been to many noble families in Chang'an, but I have never seen a young man of this age who is so outstanding."
"Could it be that the county governor has made an observation?"
Someone laughed and asked, "I wonder which county he is from."
"It is said that Zhang Meng was recommended by Neishi Luo Zhen."
Everyone took a light breath.
Neishi is in charge of the capital Chang'an and the surrounding three auxiliary areas. Although the position is equivalent to a prefect, it seems insignificant due to the presence of the emperor and the Three Dukes and Nine Ministers in Chang'an. Because there are many nobles and talented scholars within the city, Zhang Sanfeng was able to be discovered by Neishi, making his background even more mysterious and unpredictable.
Walking on the road, the weather suddenly turned gloomy. In an instant, the autumn rain as big as beans poured down heavily. Zhang Yan hurriedly used the book in her hand to cover her head and took shelter under the eaves of a shop in the East Market, with a faint smile at the corner of her mouth.
According to Mao Hen's words, she doesn't seem like a virtuous queen consort.
She was jealous and didn't like her husband having other women, so she deliberately flattered Zhao Liangdi to make him feel proud of himself. As a result, that foolish Liangdi became arrogant and thought he could swagger around the Weiyang Palace relying on the favor of the young empress, which made people in all palaces resentful, and Liu Ying was also displeased.
Last month, Liu Yingwei wore plain clothes in Chang'an East City and witnessed the arrogance of Zhao's family members. They even dared to be rude to Emperor Wu when he appeared in public, not recognizing him as the emperor himself. She deliberately let Empress Lü know about this incident. As a result, Empress Lü was furious and ordered Zhao Yi to be demoted to Yongchang County. Liu Yingwei did not appear to defend him after all. However, afterwards, she was afraid that he would be heartbroken and comforted her for a while.
She had barely seen Zhao Cong's face, yet she had already turned against this good husband. However, it seemed that in her heart, she couldn't be at peace either. Without Zhao, the good husband, there would eventually be Li, the good husband, Zeng Qizi, in the Weiyang Palace. Coming and going, unless she could truly obtain Liu Xuan, there would never be an end to this.
Having stayed in this time and space for too long, although wealthy and noble, I feel a bit lonely. I had forgotten the happy days of studying in the university campus in my previous life, laughing and playing with a large group of classmates, but just now, in this oldest academy, I found back some of that feeling.
The rainwater flows along the eaves to the ground, washing out a small depression, and then splashing up, slightly hitting the hem of the skirt, cool and refreshing.
"Master." Yin Qin braved the rain to buy an umbrella, and Bai Yu Jing accompanied her to stand under the eaves to avoid the rain. Seeing this, she frowned and advised, "You really shouldn't have come to this academy. Not to mention other things, Master is kind-hearted and will not bear to occupy one of the limited spots in the academy that those poor students who are eager to learn could have had."
"There's no such thing." Zhang Yan smiled and shook her head, "Because I'm coming, Your Majesty added a quota for the three auxiliaries."
Bai Yu Jing was choked again and said, "Even so, it's still not good. The master is a noble lady, and this girl disguising herself as a man will inevitably leave some clues. If she offends someone every day or is discovered by others, I'll be dead and unable to explain myself, but what about the master's reputation?"
Zhang Yan was taken aback, collected her smile and said, "Don't worry, I won't be staying here for long. After a few days, when the Xijiao Taixueguan hostel is officially established, it will be inconvenient for me to come."
But stealing some joy and remembering past loves.
Someone suddenly called out behind her, "Lady Zhang."
The two were equally startled, and turned to look back. They saw a refined and handsome white-clad man also taking shelter from the rain under the eaves of the house. He looked like a scholar.
"It turned out to be Xuzai's wine." Zhang Yanqing said with a cold smile.
Half a month ago, Xu Xiang was dismissed as the Sui Du Wei and appointed as the Doctor of Jiao Shi, in charge of various matters during the initial period of Tai Xue's establishment. He was under the jurisdiction of Feng Chang Sun Shu Tong, with a salary of 600 stones. Compared to before, it can be said that he has been promoted.
She waved her hand, indicating that Bai Yujing didn't need to worry, and smiled as she asked, "Is Xu Jiu satisfied with this official position now?"
Her eyes were filled with complex emotions, and Xiāng Chéng sincerely bowed again, saying "Thank you, Your Highness, for your kindness."
A position of 600 dan of grain in Chang'an, where the powerful and noble were everywhere, was not a particularly impressive status. Apart from the Taixue Doctor and the Libationer, those who later became prominent after leaving the Imperial Academy, even if they became high-ranking officials or nobles, still had a relationship with Xu Xiang that was like that of a teacher to his student.
The connections and prestige it brings are an invaluable wealth.
"Your Ladyship, I have written a 'Monthly Ordinance for the Four Peoples' as you instructed me to do some time ago. Would Your Ladyship care to take a look?" She pulled out from her sleeve a farm book written on new paper and handed it over to Zhang Yan.
Zhang Yan flipped through it for a moment, and smiled, "I'd like to take a closer look, but it's getting late and I should head back to the palace. I'll return it to you next time after I've finished reading."
"Nature is following the will of the goddess." Xǔ Xiāng secretly gazed at the boyishly dressed girl in front of him, it had been almost half a year since they last met. In that half year, she seemed to have grown taller again, becoming even more gentle and beautiful. Thinking this, in an instant, Xǔ Xiāng only felt that the small silk pouch hidden in his chest suddenly became scorching hot, burning his heart with restlessness.
Due to a rain delay, Zhang Yan didn't arrive at the palace's side door until after the hour of You, and then she quietly entered the palace and returned to the Pepper Chamber.
"Your Majesty." Zuo Si stepped forward and said, "The Emperor has been waiting inside for a while now."
"Oh, really?" She said happily, hastily changing into a slightly damp long gown, putting on an outer cloak and entering the hall, calling out "Hold on."
Liu Ying sat up on the couch and suddenly saw that her clothes were disheveled, hastily turning away to avoid him, scolding, "Get dressed before talking." She still felt a faint flush on her face.
