Chapter 48 - Luring by cooking

Ash scratches her head. “How can you lure the boars with the rabbits?”

Civ gives a mysterious smile again. Seeing that smile, Arsh spoke at the same time Civ replied. “I will tell you later!”

Both of them said the same thing!

“Civ! Can you just tell us right away?!” Arsh wants to grab Civ by the head and start twisting her knuckles to Civ’s head.

Civ scratches his nose, “I will tell you later. To be honest, I need to gather some materials to make sure it worked.”

In fact, Civ already has all of the materials aside from rabbit meat. He is just making an excuse to avoid further questions. It might consume their time planning instead of executing.

The rest of the group stops asking Civ, and they prepare to leave, going south. Luk was the one tasked with taking care of the camp.

After leaving, they went straight to the pine oak area.

“I think we need to stop here.” Safi alerted everyone.

  “Why?” Civ asked.

But before Safi replied, they heard the squeaking from the bushes in front of them.

  SQUEEK

“So these are the green rabbits!” Arsh focused her eyes on the rabbits that were slowly hopping out one by one.

Arsh firmly gripped her spear. She moves forward together with Horm.

Kes and Civ start preparing their arrows.

By Arsh's command, she and Horm attacked the rabbits. Both of them have their own area. Arsh focuses on killing the rabbits on the left side, Horm on the right.

Civ also guided Kes to assist Arsh on the left side. They do it by shooting arrows at any rabbits that might escape Arsh’s defenses. The ordeal was done within 5 minutes.

“Great. Everyone, please start gathering the rabbit meat.” Kivrah happily instructed the rest of the group. He also wanted to join the battle, but looking at how efficient Arsh and Horm are, it is better to let them handle it for now.

Upon counting, Civ was delighted. The number of hunted rabbits was 15!

Finishing their mission in the south. They gathered some firewood around the area and herbs, then quickly left the area.

Returning from the camp, everything seems normal day aside from the boar sightings.

As Luk finished reporting, he asked. “Why don’t we try to hunt that boar outside?”

Some from the hunting group also have the same sentiment.

“It’s not yet time. For now, we need to rely on other ways to gather food.” Civ explained.

The camp is aware that the supply of boar meat is low right now. They are only relying on berries and rabbit meat. They need to start hunting boars again, or else there will be a food shortage again.

The hunting group understands and holds their positions to guard each wall.

When they started working on what they collected in the south, Kivrah commanded. “Please start removing the skins from these rabbits and smoke them.”

The camp happily handles the rabbits. They process them based on the Tribe leader’s instructions.

After Civ’s discussion with the hunting team, he did some inventory on the herbs. Then, he worked on making handheld spears and arrows for the rest of the day. The day went by with no issues.

The next morning, after doing the morning exercise, the sky was already up and bright.

He went to the cave and checked the hide.

Civ's eyes were sparkling. “This is ready.”

The boar’s hide was pliable and ready for the next step.

Civ called Safi and Shaman Mashu.“Can you please help me cook the smoked rabbits?”

Hearing the request from Civ, both of them happily obliged. Also, they want to learn how to cook. Eating that soup rabbit made them want to make more for the tribe.

When the three of them arrived in the middle of the camp. There were three workspaces that were already set up by the firewood team.

“Shaman Mashu, Safi. We’ll need to simultaneously cook the meat.” Civ explained.

Hearing this, both of them were curious about why they needed to do it. But since they have their own workplace, they think it's much better to learn while having their own space.

In the workplace, they have their own flat stone for chopping. Then a three-stone stove with a jar of water that is currently heating to boil.

Both of them sat in their place while facing Civ’s workplace.

As per Civ’s instructions, they chopped the herbs and the meat. Then they place it in their jar to cook.

A couple of minutes later, the jars started to boil. From the boiling jar, a sweet and hunger-inducing smell escapes the camp. The tribe patiently waited for the instructions from Civ.

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.

But looking at Civ, they were puzzled. Instead of a smile, Civ’s was serious. Like a person waiting for something.

Civ quietly listens to the surroundings. ‘Any moment now’

Someone from the tribe wants to ask Civ why he was acting this way. But they heard Safi shouting.

“Boars, boars are coming on all sides!”

Hearing this, everyone started to do their task when defending the camp.

Someone gathered the tools and weapons from the cave. While the hunting and firewood team ran to the walls. Seeing this as a well-oiled machine, Civ cannot help but appreciate the tribe.

Civ ran to the north to check the situation.

“Pil, what is the situation?” Civ asked while climbing the ladder.

“I’m seeing boars running to our camp!” Pil replied.

Civ and the rest prepared their bows and atlatls. What Civ saw was 3 adult mowhawk boars running.

‘Looks like the bait was successful,’ Civ happily concluded his experiment. The boar's nose is sensitive to smell. Smelling this kind of new smell, you cannot help but run towards the tasty smell.

Kivrah also climbed the ladder in the north. Then they heard also on the other side. “Boars are coming on our side!” East and South.

A question raised in Civ’s thought, “Why south?”

He wanted to investigate more about it, but they needed to resolve this issue right now.

The boars ran toward the barricades. Civ and the rest welcomed these boars with arrows.

Kivrah, on the other hand, threw spears to give these boars maximum damage.

There were three boars that attacked them on the north side.

Seeing these boars attack the barricades and immediately get tangled in the spikes. Which was quickly dealt with.

Civ keeps looking at the right side of his eye. He has a bad feeling on that side. Seeing everything was already done in the north, he commanded the group.

“Please stay here and keep on the lookout. I’ll check the East wall.”

Everyone nodded. Civ quickly jumped to the ladder and ran toward the east wall, where he heard Luk's shaky voice shouting.

“Keep shooting! Oh no, another one!” Luk shouted.

Hearing this, Civ fastened his running and climbed on one of the vacant ladders in the middle.

“Luk, what are you seeing now!” Civ asked while climbing the ladder.

“The boar, the boar was running into the gaps!” Luk’s voice was trembling while reporting what he was seeing.

‘Oh no, not the clever one.’ Civ reached the top and saw that the boar was running brutally straight to the gap.

“Spears and arrows, throw them now!” Civ commanded.

Luk and Kes threw spears and arrows, respectively.

  GRUNT

  GRUNT

  REEEEEEEE

The boar was hit with the spears and arrows. But instead of slowing down, it reached its rage and recklessly charged towards the wall.

The barricades that were touched by its body were misplaced in the field.

“Keep shooting it!” Civ commanded them.

They tried their best to throw anything at this boar, but its momentum is not stopping.

When it reached a meter near the wall, it jumped. But it jumped diagonally.

  REEEEEE

  THUD

The raging boar that jumps diagonally lands its two feet in the pitfall and dives straight to the spikes!

It happened so instantaneously that the boar was unable to make a sound.

Civ looked for a second first to the boar who fell, but he quickly checked the surroundings for any boars.

Then he heard Kivrah shouting from the north. “No boars sighted in North!”

Safi, on the other side, “No boars sighed in the South!”

Hearing everyone is safe, Civ takes a deep breath and shouts. “No boars sighed in the East!”

Hearing that every wall was protected, the tribe cheers!

Civ and the rest guarding the east wall had not climbed down yet. They are looking at the boar fallen in the trap. Observing if any movements are showing.

“Civ, I think it's dead already,” Ras suggested.

“I think so also Civ.” Luk agreed.

Civ nodded, “I think it is dead, look at its body.”

Both of them tried to look at it. But since they are standing on the ladder that was placed away from the pitfall, it’s hard to see it from their angle.

“Uhm, sorry I can’t fully see it Civ,” Ras replied while Luk scratched his head.

Civ’s eyes widened. “Sorry, right. You cannot fully see it there. Let’s go outside and check the boar.”

After they climbed down, Kivrah was already walking towards them, smiling.

“So this is the lure you mentioned?!” Kivrah's cold smile, with a combination of icy gaze, made Civ’s hair on his body stand up.

“I-i-i can explain Father. Let’s collect the boars outside first.” Civ tried to finish his sentence in his shaky voice. The time is of the essence now. They need to collect as many materials as possible.

The group went outside, and they started in the south. There was only one boar that attacked this wall. Then they move to the East wall. Two boars were killed on this side. One was killed at the barricade.

Everyone looked at where the other boar was, and they walked towards the wall.

A gasp was heard through the wall.

“That killed the boar?” Someone from the crowd commented as they looked down into the pit.

“This hole that we dig Civ, i-i-it was more dangerous than I expected.” Horm knows that the intention was to kill any monsters that would attack them. But not to this extent.

What they saw below was that the boar was pierced by multiple spikes!

‘A devastating scene.‘ Kivrah whispered to himself.

He looked into the row of holes the group dug. They need to be careful with this pitfall that they made. Good thing it was recognizable since they put a stick that stands out.

“You are right, Horm. I advise everyone of you to be careful with these pitfalls. Don’t come near it as much as possible.” Civ reminded everyone.

The group quickly nodded. They do not want to die the same way this boar died.

When the collection of boars was done, a total of 6 boars were collected!

Looking at the food supply, Kivrah was delighted. “It will provide the tribe with food on many Sun days!”

Civ nodded. “You are right Father!”

In fact, it will give them 9 to 15 days of food supply if they manage it right. With this, the worry food supply for the tribe was resolved temporarily.

When the group started butchering the boars, Civ asked his Father.

“Father, can I have some of the boar skins?”

“Sure, but for what purpose?” Kivrah asked.

“Well, for many things. That is what I can say for now.” Civ wanted to say experiment, but it might be misinterpreted by his Father.

“Alright, I trust you will make use the most of it. You can get half of the harvested skins if you like.” Kivrah let his son do what he wanted. The animal skins are not needed right now. Since everyone from the hunting group already has their ceremonial clothes.

Civ happily accepted the three full boar skins of the boars and then picked up a jar. Then, when to the hut with a skull, then broke it using a stone and scooped the brain inside it, and put it in a jar.

The hunting group was disturbed by what Civ was doing.

Arsh asked Civ who was smiling while doing it.

“Civ, are you out of your mind?!”
