Chapter 53 - From scouting to what is that dirt?

Heeding the command from Civ, everyone around him stood up. Then they waited for his instructions.

“Someone help us wring out this skin. The rest, wait for my instruction.”

Civ pulled the animal skin and gave the other end to Vel. They fold it in half and start twisting it by using two sticks.

Twisting it takes much energy for both of them, so they pass it around.

“We need to twist this skin until there is no water left in the skin.” Civ added.

Everyone acknowledged the task and started passing it around.

Even though the smell is unpleasant, they still tried their best to wring out.

While everyone is busy removing the water from the boar skin, Civ checked the frame Vel created. It was 7 ft. (2 m.) for both length and width. Looking at the stability, it wobbles if you shake it a little bit. So he added additional braces on each corner and secured it with a cordage.

“Civ, there is no water left in this skin I think,” Arsh commented while trying her best to twist the skin.

Hearing this, Civ quickly checks the skin.

“Great work everyone. Vel, help me place it on the frame I requested you to make.” Civ commanded Vel.

  He happily followed.

In front of the hut, the lean frame was placed.

“Hold the rest of the skin. I will make a hole in the next section.” Civ handed the entire skin to Vel. Using his stone knife, he punctured the skin to make a hole. Then, he grabbed a thicker cordage, tied it, and then tied the other end of the cordage to the wooden frame. Hanging it on the frame.

“Vel, you continue the process. Start puncturing the skin and tie it to the frame with cordage. Then repeat it on all sides.” Civ explained.

Vel already understands the initial process, so he carefully followed how Civ made it.

“Everyone, I would like to teach you something today.” Civ faced the crowd.

“What I’m working on in the past few days is to make this skin more useful!” Civ happily revealed.

Some gasp, others murmured. While Arsh and Kivrah silently observe.

“As you all can see. This boar skin does not have hair. Because I removed it!”

“Ohhh!” Realizing it, the crowd was in awe of what they were seeing.

“Can we remove the hair from the boar? I think we can pluck it, but not all of the hair was removed.” Someone commented from the crowd.

All of them have the same sentiment.

“But how can you remove it. I will take more than a Sun day to remove even a small part of the hair?” Pil asked.

“I’m glad you asked Pil.” Civ sat down at the ash pit and grabbed a handful of it.

“By using this!” Civ showed his fist to the crowd.

Skepticism was brewing among the crowd.

“An ash? How can it remove the hair?”

“Maybe we can rub it. I do not know, but maybe we can?”

Different ideas went around the group.

“How can we use ash Civ?” One from the crowd raised the question.

“Let me show you.” Civ put the ash in the big basin based on the standard lye formula. After mixing it, he submerges the boar skin inside the basin. Then put a big stone as a weight.

“We will just need to let it sit there until we can remove the hair without any effort!” Civ explained.

“Ohhhhh!” The crowd nodded and acknowledged the process.

“For the other skin, you can do it. I will just guide everyone. Who wants to volunteer?” After Civ asked them. Arsh and some people from the crowd raised their hands to experience the process.

Civ gives them the instructions. At the same time, he is helping Vel to stretch the skin that they submerged in the brain solution.

Once they finished soaking the new boar skin in the lye solution. Vel and Civ also just finished stretching the skin.

Looking at it, it was white with beige in color. They make sure that there is no sagging skin, and when it does, they add a new rope in that section.

“Now everyone, this is the most important part of this process. We will stretch the skin even further.” Civ picked up a smooth-edged stick, and he and Vel started running the smooth edge into the skin. Up, down, left, and right.

Once they did it, using their palm, they checked if the surface was still wet. If so, they will continue to scratch that surface until it's dry.

The author's tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

The skin for them is too big for the two to handle by themselves.

So Civ called the crowd. “Our arms are starting to get tired. Who wants to continue the scratching?”

“Me! Me!” Everyone wants to give it a try.

Seeing the willingness of their tribe, Civ is glad that they are willing.

After a few minutes. Vel and Civ were replaced by someone from their tribe in a split second. The need to make sure that once the scratching of the skin is started, they need to do this non-stop.

The group continues this for 8 - 10 more hours. The skin that was stretched started to sag off the frame. But Civ and the group continued working on it until every part of the front and back of the skin was dry.

Some of the crowd, especially the older ones, had already fallen asleep after the night had fallen. At the same time, the hunting group and the teenage group stayed to help with working on the boar skin.

Most of the population of their tribe worked on stretching skin until it was completely dry and soft. After they finished, it was already past night around 9 PM in Earth’s time.

“Thank you everyone. This should be good, completely dry now.” Civ started removing the boar skin from the frame.

“Whew. We will take a rest, then Civ.” Someone from the group informs Civ, and they sleep in the hut around the campfire.

“Alright. Thank you everyone again.” Civ thanks the group.

Next, he started making a teepee-like stick structure around his height. Then wrapped the animal skin there.

“Civ, what are you doing?” Vel, who was still awake, asked Civ. Arsh and Horm were also still awake. Observing Civ.

“This is the last step. Just like meat, we need to preserve this skin.” Civ explained.

“Alright. Then does it mean we can eat it?” Horm asked.

“Good question. We cannot eat it. Unlike the smoked meat, this skin was created not to be consumed.” Civ warned them.

A sigh from the crowd was heard.

‘Why do all of them want to eat the boar skin?’ A funny thought from Civ, but he brushed it off and continued.

“We need to smoke both sides. Once it's finished, I will rest for the night.”

Civ started the smoking process by using an ember and putting some bark from an oak tree. Then he put it in the pit, and he added some rotten, dried wood to enhance the smoke. The need is for the smoke to be somewhat cold smoke and not too hot. It might cook the skin and stiffen the final product.

Once the smoking started, he started counting for an hour.

While they are waiting, Arsh raised a question.

“Civ, I think we, the boars in the north, were already left. When do you think we can return there?” Vel and the rest looked at Civ. Waiting for a reply.

All of the hunting group wants to explore the other parts of the north. As the leader of the hunting group. Civ will be the one who has the final decision to request it from the tribe leader if they can leave.

Civ paused for a second and said. “I know everyone wants to explore north. But I feel it's not yet safe. Let’s give it a few Sun days. We will explore it once we are also properly equipped. “

With the current material they are working on, this will help them in many ways.

As they talked for an hour, Civ stood up and started removing the cordages around the smoking skin. Vel followed Civ and assisted him in any way he could.

The two of them wrapped the other side of the skin and continued the smoking process of the skin. After another hour, they finished smoking.

“This should be fine.” As the final step, they remove the skin from the teepee hut they created.

After they removed it, Civ ran his palm over the boar skin. A warm and soft feeling when he ran his hands. Horm, Vel, and Arsh also ran their palm.

“It is surprisingly soft! This is amazing!” Arsh cannot help but comment on the skin. She knew the process that was done, but she was still amazed by the material.

“Now that we have created this Civ. How are we going to use this?” Vel asked.

Civ hugged the smoked skin like a long-lost friend.

“Ohhhh this is so soft.” Civ hugged it while closing his eyes. Then he opened his eyes and looked around. He saw his friend's eyes were drooping.

He smiled and started tidying up the surroundings.

“Everyone, let’s move this conversation to tomorrow. I will show you the rest once we have rested.”

Even though they want to learn more, they also agree with Civ. So they walk towards the hut and sleep there. Civ also slept in the hut. Into one of the benches.

The next morning, Civ heard someone calling his name.

“Civ, wake up. It's already morning.” From the voice, he knew Horm was trying to wake him up.

‘Wait, Horm?!’ Civ quickly opened his eyes.

What he saw was that Horm, Vel, and Arsh were already awake. Standing next to the bench. He looked around, and the sun was not up yet.

“Why are all of you waking me this early?” Civ asked as he slowly sat down and stretched his body.

“About the boar skin. You said you would talk about it today. We want to know about it.” Vel’s eyes were sparkling. He can’t contain his excitement.

Seeing his friend's excitement, he got an idea.

“Alright, wake up the hunting group first,” Civ commanded.

  “Sure, but why?” Arsh asked.

Then, after a couple of minutes, waking up the group.

In front of the group. Civ was standing, “We will be doing some exercise. After the daily practice, we will focus on bow and arrow today.”

A grunt in agony was heard in the group. But they started the exercise and finished the morning training with bow and arrow.

In today’s training. Civ instructed the group to practice a moving object. By throwing a piece of wood in the air, they try to hit it before it lands on the ground.

Surprisingly, Luk, Arsh, and Pil were having an accuracy of 80% on the practice.

Seeing this result gives Civ a boost in confidence in defending the camp.

“Alright. Now that all of you are tired. It’s time to show all of you how we can use the skin we made yesterday.” Civ clasped his hands. Some from the tribe bring the skin and the tools that Civ prepared.

“Arsh, Vel. Remember the bones we shaped? I will show you how to use it!” Civ picked the pointed bones with a hole on the other side. He picked a thin cordage and tried to put the thread in the hole.

While Civ is doing a demonstration, Kivrah also went to the back of the cave. Noticing the hunting group observing Civ. He also takes a seat while observing his son trying his best to put the thread in the hole.

Kivrah whispered to Vel. “What is he doing?”

Vel shakes his head. “Tribe leader, I don’t know. He is not saying anything.”

Civ tried multiple times, but it's still not passing through the hole. “Still not going through.”

He put the thread into his mouth. Then wet it. After that, he tried it and this time.

“Ohhhh, it went through!” Ras exclaimed.

Civ continued to run the thread until he felt it was enough. Then he cut the thread and tied it in one knot.

After that, he grabs the animal skin. Fold the skin where a small hole was.

Then, using the bone with a thread, he was able to puncture the hole!
