Interlude: Gate mythology - Ancient Language and Magic

Interlude: Gate mythology - Ancient Language and Magic - The Unforgettables: A ZeroYear litRPG.

Each of the various civilizations that arrived at Gate interpreted what they found there in their particular way, especially the structural monoliths and all the material written inside them. The language of Gate was then called the "ancestral language" under the assumption that an ancient civilization had done everything they found and that the incredible powers made available in Gate were some kind of superior science left by those supposed ancestral beings.

Studying the content and context present in the eight houses of the Academy, which were the main structural monolith cluster in Gate, it was discovered that several multiverses existed in separated timelines. Each of these multiverses potentially had rational species similar to the current ones, and it was also known that each multiverse was preserved in the center of Gate in concentric layers called the Underworld. Something common to all these multiverses is the mystery about what was in the beginning, if there was indeed any beginning.

In the adventure of "The Unforgettables," after the cataclysm, there are 8 multiverses preserved within the Underworld (named U8 to U1, spherical layers one inside the other, with U1 being the oldest and innermost), which implies that the current multiverse would be the ninth (M9 is the name given to the multiverse after the cataclysm). This type of knowledge is in the realm of hypotheses due to the great difficulty of researching anything in the Underworld (most of those who venture there never return), and after the cataclysm, access to the Academy became very restricted. Generally, the knights of the first house would be specialists in researching this kind of thing. Still, in New Metropolis, all this knowledge was banned from the public, and the knights, as well as researchers of these topics, were persecuted and generally executed. Campaigns such as the Kuj′s journey to the far North were quite common in the first years after the cataclysm since the blame for the catastrophes was placed on the knights who apparently failed to prevent the end of the world.

In any case, before the cataclysm (in M8), things were much calmer; the cultures that arrived in Gate were amazed by the world and made various parallels with their own interpretations of what they found there. The humans who first arrived at Gate came from Earth and had a strong influence from Chinese and Greek mythology. Then, afterward, when modern-age humans started returning from the dead, there was an Anglophonic reinterpretation of all the things. Below, I will list the reinterpretation in English based on the Greek first attempt combined with an adaptation of the phonemes found in the ancestral language.

  Ancient language phonemes:

  Schools of Magic

The 25 schools of magic names are presented in the "Literal (magic)" column above as they are associated with the ancient language. Each of the 25 consonants represents one school, and each syllable combines one consonant with one vowel to represent one magic spell. Not all spells are direct effects that represent the meaning of the syllable, but most have some effects that could be related. Also, the spells that appear on "The Unforggetables" are M8-9 basic spells; the basic spells from previous multiverses that could be learned inside the Underworld could be very different in effect but similar in overall potency.

The magic in Gate could be learned by any rational being that enters contact with didactic monoliths inside the Academy or other monoliths scattered thought the Gate surface, those didactic monoliths are stones with 6 concentric circles engraved, all black or sometimes with a symbol representing a number or a consonant, the 6 cycles correspond to the vowels and begin and end with an "a", the order usually is "a-u-o-i-e-a" but some rare monoliths could be found in a different order outside the Academy, regardless the order the effects are the same. When a rational being touches such a didactic monolith circle, not only is the sound of the sylabe ominously produced, but some weakened effect of the magic comes into existence as well, converting some of the monolith's mana into the magical effect. The Vabala have a travel version of didactic monoliths for Creation, Communication, and Transport magic schools, and those monoliths could be used by the wizard apprentice when casting their magics for the first time to guarantee its effect; after some training, there is no more need for those monoliths.

  EXTRA: Symbols on Monoliths

Below is an image of the letters that appear on the monoliths when touching some of them, as well as one of the Nailia alphabets based on these symbols. The symbols have been preserved since M7, but not necessarily the meaning nor the correspondence between schools of magic and the phonemes.
