A Dumb Wish

  Ch 3

Ah, this answers quite a few of my questions on how this works. Granting infinite Wishes did sound quite a bit broken. And now I also have an actual reason to grant Wishes beyond my own desire for adventure.

Replacing the explanation appeared a new screen, listing off people and their Wishes. I can even make notes on them or mark some to look at later.

After looking through the initial Wishes I scrolled for a bit… I haven’t even been alive for a day, why are there so fuckin many already? Just how many people are willing to risk it all to become a Legend? Like, that’s not exactly a small thing, I doubt whatever the system declares a Legendary act is going to be easy.

I sigh, knowing exactly why I have so many requests. People are not good at thinking about consequences. Even if I grant their Wish chances are it’ll never come to fruition because they simply aren’t willing to go through with their end of the bargain.

I end up scrolling mindlessly for a bit, making the occasional comment, looking at many straight up baffling ideas. I do laugh occasionally, some of these people are exceptionally delusional, and others don’t have any actual intent on making a Wish and just make jokes, which I can appreciate.

The author's tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

But I do eventually come across a Wish that I like. And it confuses me. It’s not a Wish that comes from a want of adventure or some perilous situation. It’s… I don’t know. But I feel something when I look at it. It’s just a simple Wish, and maybe that’s why. It’s not a desire for wealth or power or to look cool. It’s just something innocent. So Lillani Frivi…

  Your Wish is granted.

Oh shit I actually have to come up with how it’s gonna happen. Figured the system would do that for me. I’m not complaining though, this gives me much more assurance that the wishes I grant won’t end badly.

I have to make sure they get the reward they asked for, but if I find loopholes? Hehe, beware! This law school dropout shall do unspeakable things! Not to Lillani tho, I like her. I do eventually come up with what I think is a pretty good reward worthy for any trials she goes through.

There. Took a bit more effort laying it out than I thought. Wanted to make sure she gets the best she can, but not something that’s completely broken. She gets a nice hideaway and the best damn warm bath ever. I think anyway, I have no idea what this world’s standard is for those. Still, a personal space that you can use as storage is great even barring the hot spring.

I hit enter and I can feel something pull from my chest, that little ball of adventure I made, and it goes just as quickly.

… And that’s it. No resounding trumpets or even a notification. A tad anticlimactic, but it’s probably for the best. I imagine any celebration would get stale after the 20th time. It’s probably a tad more exciting for her though. Imagining the look on her face makes me smile.

But I’ve goofed off too much. It’s time to learn how to use magic… and how to walk. I’m starting to feel vulnerable being this helpless. Which is probably something I should have started feeling sooner.

  ^***^

Lillani shivered. The cave provided some shelter from the snowy storm outside, but nowhere near enough. Not if she didn’t want to freeze to death in her sleep. The scraps of clothes on her person provided no comfort, neither did the shackles around her arms and legs.

Lillani Frevi the Forest Nymph, taken from her home by raiders. Enslaved and dragged into their frozen hellscape of a home. As she was led to her new unfree life, a dragon attacked. Nothing like the majestic species of her home, with gleaming scales and majestic flight. Wise protectors, unlike the brute that had ‘freed’ her. It looked more like an oversized moose, rough patchy fur and antlers that smashed her captors and sent all of the caravan scattered to the wind.

So now instead of living a life of servitude, she will die free. She did not know whether to thank the beast or curse it. In the end, she decided that both in the same breath would be most fitting.

As she lay in that damp cave, knowing her end was coming, she could only fantasize of the hotsprings she and her sisters would sit in, carefree and joyous for all their lives. She only wished to go back to that spring, and take a nice warm bath.

Her shivering, her self pity, her pain, they all paused for a split second when she read that notification.

Of all the people, in all the countries, in all the continents… her wish was granted. One dumb dying wish for a bath, was granted.

Tears rolled down her face as she laughed. It was unhinged and full of sorrow and joy. That Wish means something now.

It means someone is rooting for her, that she’s no longer alone. Lillani doesn’t know if her wish was granted because of the dragon’s pity for her or if it’s just a whim, but she’ll take it all the same. It believes she’ll live, and that she’ll do even more.

It believes she won’t die here. And It’s right, she won’t.

Lillani felt something within her. It was hot, and it flowed through her. She felt it flow through her chest before stopping. She wouldn’t let it stop though. So she pushed, she pushed with everything she had left to give. And the dam broke.

She didn’t feel cold anymore. That hot liquid energy running through her body didn’t just keep her from freezing, but it made her more warm than she could ever remember feeling.

Lillani would survive. And she would make damn sure to take that bath.
