C144: Magical Practice Continues

After his work helping out people who were sick or injured, Niphru left the hospital auro the spire, remaining in his fox form this time, using an illusion to keep himself hidden along the way. Upon arrival at the spire, he dropped his illusion and quickly ran up the stairs, making it back to the residence he shared with Dawn.

Unsurprised by Dawn’s absen their home, Niphru quickly jogged into the kit and began cooking himself some food, having bee hungry during his time at the hospital. Once he’d eaten, Niphru trated on their bond and found that Dawn was below the spire.

As he focused on Dawn’s senses, Niphru realized she ractig with her earth magid had gone downstairs to avoid damaging anything. Niphru decided to join her and headed dowairs in a more calm mahan his upward travel to get home.

After unlog the stairs down from the first floor, Niphru began to head toward the practis before pausing for a moment. It wouldn’t do to arm the person monit them, after all, so he turned ao visit their room, inf them that he was going to join Dawn.

Fortunately, they did not have any problem with this, a him know he was free to go meet with her. A few moments ter, he checked Dawn’s senses and verified that she wasn’t throwing magiear the door before entering.

Waiting for her to finish what she was doing, Niphru remarked, “Hello, Dawn, why the practice with earth magibsp; I was thinking I could join you just to help get better at it since I’m not good at it.”

“Oh, hi! I ractig for exactly that reason, myself. We are supposed to be somewhat skilled ihing, after all, not just really good at ohing and uo do others,” Dawn responded with a smile as she paused her practice to turn and face him.

Niphru nodded, suddenly remembering that they had indeed been told that when they joihe group with Viera, Thomas, Richard, and Miana. They had dohe minimum required to be properly allowed to join them, but didn’t progress much beyond that.

He then replied, “I’d fotten about that, actually! I suppose it is a good idea to keep w on other forms of magic just in case they are useful. And Thomas’ earth magic has been useful several times now.”

Dawn nodded aured for him to join her before stating, “I’m pulling material from my left, so feel free to take rock from the right; that on’t interfere with each other.”

Niphru quickly joined her, then promptly fttened himself into the stone floor as he fot about how much he had to terbance against the recoil of moving a rge mass of rock.

Gng up, he was gd to see that Dawn was already focused on her own practid didn’t notibsp; He jumped back to his feet and acted like nothing happened as he began again.

As the two of them flung rocks at the pilrs, the stoed bato the walls and ground before flowing back to fill in the holes they’d taken it from. Niphru paused for a moment at the sight.

“That looks really weird. I guess it is proof that the whole spire is a magical artifact, though,” he remarked before resuming his practice.

After a few minutes of chug rocks of various sizes and shapes, Niphru switched to simple manipution, reshaping the rod spinning it around himself, careful to avoid getting too close to Dawn. While simple forms like spheres aangles were easy, more plex shapes took signifitly more effort, even if they were a simple bination.

Even more difficult was trying to turoo sand-sized particles, though crumbling it to gravel was easy enough. More difficult still was rebining multiple stones into a single one, even with the magic of the spire’s stone making it easier to trol. Niphru found himself quite vihat he wouldn’t be able to do it at all outside.

He quickly found himself tired from the effort of maniputing rocks, marveling at Dawn’s tinual efforts as if it wasn’t a big deal. Instead, he decided to pull some water from the nearby well and practice with it, since he was already quite skilled with both fire and air magic.

As Niphru sat down and maniputed a blob of water, he tio watch Dawn’s practice, w when she would get tired. In the end, it appeared as if he didn’t have as much raw power behind his magic as she did, but then again, she had used magic much more than he had.

His foxfire wasly normal magid he relied heavily on it—perhaps too much so, now that he thought about it. After a few moments of thought, he shook his head and resumed his practice, deg that he should put more effort into it and less into his foxfire.

When Dawn finally took a break, he brought up his thoughts to her, and she replied, “Well, it isn’t a test, so you shouldn’t feel bad about it. You do a lot of things I ’t due to your fmes. I trol my fire magiough to copy the bit where it only burain things, but it takes effort for me to do that. And I only heal with magic that tires me out. Additionally, you use illusions. Supposedly, light magi do that, but it requires incredible trol and years of practice.”

Niphru paused for a moment to take in her words before responding, “I suppose you are right; I hadn’t thought of it like that. Plus I am pretty good with wind and force magic, even if I ’t use as much raw power and have less endurance.”

Dawn nodded as she sat down and hugged him, patting him on the head before reminding him, “Just keep in mind it isn’t a test, and you shouldn’t pare yourself to others. We’re both way better at fire thahers are, even Miana, but they are also better at other forms of magibsp; That doesn’t make us aer or worse than them, just different.”She ughed for a moment before remarking, “It’s funny, I had the same worries before, but Viera helped me see it differently when I brought it up during one of roup meetings while you were busy practig. And now it is my turn to share it with you.”

Niphru looked up and thanked her before notig her hair was hanging over her fabsp; He used a little bit of light air magic to blow her hair back behind her, causio ugh again.

“Thanks for the help, Niphru, but my hair doesn’t bother me,” she said, clearly amused at his as.

As they both stood back up, Niphru decided he’d had enough of a break ahe water he’d been trolling bato the well. Pulling some more stone from the floor, he resumed maniputing it, fident that he was just fi throwing it, especially with his uanding of force magic.

Eventually, the two of them decided to stop for the day and headed back toward their residenbsp; Along the way, they saw Miana reading a book and waved to her as she looked up.

They had a quick meal ohey arrived home befoing to bed, Niphru curling up beside Dawn as they attempted to get some sleep.
