Chapter 6 Spider Web

  Chapter Six: Spider Web

The tropical rainforest of Guyana is so vast, with countless wondrous insects and plants that even a scholar-adventurer could spend a lifetime studying them and still only scratch the surface.

Liu Ting had just arrived, with the human soul occupying the body of a blood-sucking mosquito, freely wandering in the Kayah Rainforest. Everything he saw was only the tip of the iceberg here, not even worth mentioning. It's natural that he couldn't be considered experienced. With his current attitude of nothing mattering, how could he understand the fierce struggle for food and water sources among various creatures in the Kayah Rainforest, which was constantly erupting at every moment?

At this moment, he was still immersed in the efficient transportation of the black ant colony below, seemingly unaware of the danger approaching from behind. Until the emerald green spider opened its fangs and made a gesture to pounce, Old Liu suddenly became aware, his wings fluttering wildly as he quickly lifted his body high. The spider, seeing its usually effective hunting tactics fail, was clearly caught off guard, but its body, having already pounced, could not stop itself, and it ended up swinging back and forth in mid-air like a swing, before quickly climbing upwards along the silk thread it had spun, disappearing into the dense foliage of the trees.

"I'd like to see you try, but there's no door. I'm not someone who can be caught by the likes of you, a mere cat or dog. Even if I didn't want to, even a giant dragon wouldn't be able to catch me." Old Liu said with a huff, shaking his butt in the direction the spider had disappeared. He then continued with a shameless tone. To say that the structure of these insects is indeed very peculiar. Take mosquitoes, dragonflies, and flies for example. The visual organs on the top of their heads are made up of many small eye units combined to form compound eyes. Each of these independent small eyes functions as a complete eye, just like sitting in a monitoring room watching the images transmitted from cameras, they can easily see everything that happens within 150° around their bodies.

It stands to reason that with their excellent eyesight and agile flight capabilities, they should be very difficult to catch. But in reality, their eyes are not that great. Despite having so many eyes, once an object moves slowly, it will be automatically filtered out by their eyes as a lifeless object. It's precisely because of this that these insects become vulnerable when encountering experienced hunters. Because the hunters all know that as long as they approach slowly and get close enough to strike, they can easily catch these foolish prey. Everything is just that simple. But who is old Liu? Even if he was nearsighted, it's impossible for him to mistake a ugly spider constantly approaching him for a dead one, right? Although he has become an insect after transmigrating, he still had decades of experience as a human being. If he really became a mosquito and lost even the most basic judgment abilities, then he might as well go crash into a tofu and die.

Poor and bored old Liu was delighted to have teased a spider, as the saying goes "when one is warm and full, he thinks of *", brave enough to face himself, old Liu knew that at this moment, he didn't have the ability to do such "nonsensical" things. So he could only rely on teasing the little spider after dinner to get some low-level entertainment.

Just as he was thinking about whether to engage in some recreational activities, Old Liu suddenly felt something was off and quickly sprang up, flying to a height level with the treetops of the nearby forest. Only then did he get a clear view of the entire tree where the spider had retreated earlier. It wasn't until he took a look that Old Liu got another fright.

Only the ordinary rainforest plants far away from that man-eating ancient tree were not at peace. Seven or eight large trees were tightly packed together, their roots entwined, branches and leaves intertwined, forming a huge green canopy that seemed to be one giant tree. It looked like a single giant divine tree formed by seven or eight large trees combined. This was nothing unusual, after all, in the textbooks from childhood, it mentioned someone traveling to Xishuangbanna and seeing similar combinations of giant trees, which were revered as the embodiment of heavenly gods and the wonders of creation. What really shocked Old Liu was a spider web covering one side of the green canopy, seemingly composed of multiple layers, with a white flower-like pattern that covered almost a third of the size of the canopy, and seemed to be expanding at an astonishing speed.

Just by looking at the size of this huge spider web, you can tell that there are at least tens of thousands of spiders gathered on this tree crown. However, this is strange, because spiders are not supposed to be social insects, as they have the ability to hunt for food independently and do not need to rely on group strength. Moreover, each spider has a strong sense of territoriality, and if there are too many of the same species around, it will inevitably affect their own food source. So, other spiders usually don't even dare to get close, let alone visit each other's homes, as this would be seen as an invasion and lead to a fight to the death. When Old Liu traveled through the Jiaya Rainforest before, he saw many web-weaving spiders along the way, but after decades of experience, this was still his first time seeing something like this. For a moment, he couldn't help but stare blankly, with many question marks flying around in his head.

"Ah~ there's a problem." Old Liu was surprised in his heart, and he became even more interested in the things he didn't understand before him. Holding the noble idea that practice is the only standard to test truth, Old Liu unconsciously drew closer to the spider web, and at a glance, he saw the bustling scene on the spider web. There were countless spiders of all sizes and colors frantically spitting out silk and weaving webs on the tree crown, with tens of thousands of them visible. This didn't even count the ones hidden underneath that Old Liu couldn't see. It seemed like they were working under the principle of not striving for perfection, but rather speed. The work efficiency of these spiders was quite fast, but the completion degree was shocking. Originally, the insect artists known for their exquisite and delicate spider web designs now looked like miserable laborers being driven by a contractor. They were simply spitting out thin silk and sticking it together haphazardly. In some places, there were dozens of spider webs stuck together in one construction site, with several dead spiders trapped in between, unable to escape. The overall appearance was like a sticky mess, chaotic and completely unlike the usual beautiful sight of a spider web. This also showed how rare it was for Old Liu to be able to tell that this was a spider web at first glance.

"My god! Everyone's rushing to reincarnate, what's going on here?" Old Liu was truly frightened and involuntarily blurted out a sentence.

It's unknown how, but seemingly sensing Lao Liu's presence, a part of the large spider web covered in green umbrella-like structures suddenly transmitted a message filled with fear and urgency. Strangely, this time Lao Liu actually understood the meaning contained within the message. In short, the message meant: "Kill the spider!!! Save me!!!"
