  During these meetings, they were told that “freedom is mandatory.” This was The Guard’s deceptive way of saying that once granted freedom, they had to completely comply with the rules of freedom. In other words, accept leaving Seren forever, or else…

  It was also made crystal clear that they were not to interfere with human affairs, at all. The Guard’s vague threat was mysteriously forewarning: Any interaction with humans would result in punishment far worse than physical death.
