Prologue

Falling. The wind violently ripped its way through my ears. I spun rapidly like a wheel, rotating aimlessly in the air. My feet held no footing, as my arms flailed around, hoping to grab ahold of anything. But there was nothing.

Was I going to die? When I finally reach the bottom, would my body become nothing more than a splatter of flesh and blood on the earth? Am I even going to be remembered?

I felt sick. I wanted to puke. The pain in my stomach grew worse with every spin, every terrible thought that clouded my mind.

I thought that there wasn’t anything I wanted to do, no place I wanted to go. So why did I feel so much regret?

At that moment, I heard those words calling out to me once more. And as that spark had ignited within me, my fingers danced around for the string dangling from my chest.

For the first time in my life, I had gained the wings I’d always dreamed for.
