Chapter One: Careful what you wish for…
Lamar sat on the bed of his truck eating his lunch, it was midnight and not a single soul but his own was there, this is going to be a long shift he thought. The night was boring and slow, he wished that something would happen, for anything to happen but as the night progressed it seemed less likely that anything would. His 6’3” massive frame sat on his truck with his legs dangling off the bed as he watched some videos on his phone and finished up his lunch. A text from one of his best friends popped up on screen as he was scrolling to the next video.
From Sean: See you at the diner in the morning after you get off, got a lot to talk about…
He replied with a simple K which he knows Sean hates when he does that but he thought it was fun getting under his skin. After watching a few more videos he decided to head back inside because his break was about to be over. He hopped off the back of his truck and threw away his wrappers into an old grocery bag he had back there, he then placed the cover back on the back of the truck and started making his way towards the main entrance of the building. Lamar was a security officer for a hospital that specialized in orthopedics, but being that it was a holiday weekend the hospital was closed so all of the staff but him had gone home for the weekend.
The parking lot was as big as a football field, employees had to park all the way at the end of the lot furthest from the entrance. The hospital saved the closer spots, for patients, visitors, and any other people they deemed to be more important than their staff. Many of the nurses complained about having to walk that far when it gets dark out. Normally since he worked nights and the hospital was going to be closed he would have just parked near the door. But he got word that his supervisor might make a surprise visit and he was already on thin ice from an incident involving a doctor, him, and a linen closet.
As he made the walk back a sense of unease washed over him like a tidal wave, he wasn’t alone he thought he could tell he was being watched, no he thought he was being stalked. He kept walking not breaking his stride so whoever or whatever was stalking him didn’t catch on that he knew. He tried pinpointing where they were but they were moving too fast between the forests of trees that surrounded the parking lot in a U shape formation that he couldn’t figure it out.
He thought about making a break for the door but whatever is stalking him is too fast, they’d be on him before he made it a few feet he thought. He only had one option he thought, so he stopped walking and yelled.
“Hey there! Scanning the area as his booming voice echoed through the empty lot, “I know you’re out there and you might as well just show yourself, there is really no point in this hide and seek you’re doing, especially since I’m not seeking!” Nothing showed, which annoyed him, what was the point of all this he thought.
Another wave hit him out of nowhere but this time it was a feeling from whatever was out there, it was bloodlust. Lamar wasn’t afraid he can take care of himself but he wasn’t in the mood to have brawl right now, he was full from two burgers and a large fry that he washed down with a gut blaster diet soda because he was watching his calories if anyone asked. “Look, I’m not trying to fight, I just want to go inside and sit at my desk and watch the clock until it’s time for me to go home!” Lamar said as he started walking again towards the entrance. As he got half way there just as he thought they made their move. He had just enough time to put up a weak barrier.
Like a truck hitting a wall at full speed they crashed into the barrier spell he had placed around his body, both flew in opposite directions. Lamar hit the ground hard and rolled a few feet as blue light sparked on the ground from his barrier still being up. Lamar was rattled but not down, he got back up the barrier he used was quick so it wasn’t that strong, though it did save him from the attack, he was going to be ready this time but he wasn’t ready for what he was about to see.
He watched as a man in a dark blue expensive looking suit with congac colored Italian leather shoes, stand up and wiped dirt off his clothes. This was not a small man by any means 6’5” and a solid 220 pounds of muscle, even through his suit you could tell that he had the build of an athlete. Dark brown complexion, face as smooth as glass except for the well maintained and manicured beard that complimented his low taper with a lineup razor sharp. There was a crest on the lapel of the suit that indicated his status. He was a royal knight in the vampire court, from what Lamar could gather from the gold shield shaped pin. “You’re a royal. What the hell is a royal doing here” He said in shock But instead of an answer the royal just snarled and bared it’s fangs.
If you are royal you are considered to be pure blood, you were born into the faction, not tainted by human blood of any kind. There were many faction of supernatural beings, vampires, werewolves, succubus, demons, angels, and the list went on and on. Vampires and werewolves were the only two that did the whole monarch thing, all the others had their own form of hierarchy
“You don’t scare me if you think that’s what you’re doing,” Lamar turned sideways and extended his right arm he used his hand to wave the royal forward as he uttered the words “track movements and enhance speed.” Lamar eyes glowed a bright blue and a wave of energy surged throughout his body. He used these spells to enhance his abilities. The royal came at him full speed, to anyone else this would look like a blur, but to Lamar after casting those two spells the royal’s movements just looked like a normal human.
Lamar was part of a long line of hunters, there are 4 classes of hunters.
1st class is the Warrior, they basically have the physical prowess of a vampire or werewolf but without the crazy bloodlust, well at least some of them don’t. They specialize in hand to hand combat and weaponry, they normally carry some kind of large bladed weapon.
2nd class is the Shooter, above average strength and speed with fast reflexes, laser focused, trained in hand to hand but rather use a long range weapon if able. Skilled archers and snipers able to see far distances without any advance help of any kind.

3rd class is Chasseur, nimble, speed on par with vampires and werewolves. Skilled in hand to hand combat, specialize in covert affairs and reconnaissance. There the information hub, if you need to know anything they are the ones you ask.
4th class is Mage. Mages are not normally fighters, they are there for support, using healing magic, some kind of potion or a spell that is used to enhance a person abilities. They also are forgers who make and enchant weapons for the other classes. Some powerful mages do know some form of attack spells, these mages are known as Arcane Mages and they are rare. But Lamar was in a class all of his own, some would call it the secret 5th class, the Uber class, which Lamar hated being called because he wasn’t a ride share app he would say. Uber class were all 4 classes combined with one class as its main class. In Lamar’s case that was the mage class. The other three were consider sub classes, he didn’t have these classes’ full abilities and the abilities he did have weren’t as strong as someone with only that class. Without the other three classes he was still considered to be as powerful as an Arcane.
He get his strength and healing abilities from the Warrior class, his speed from the Chasseur class, and his kin vision from the Shooter class. Ubers were not welcomed in any class though, they were felt to be too powerful, that if they wanted to they can try and seize control over the council and take control over all 4 classes. There have only been four other Ubers that he know of, and they all were executed by the council, so it was in Lamar’s best interest for them not to find out about him.
The council was full of the most powerful in their respective class, one man and one woman from each class. They made all the rules of how each class operators, making treaties with the other supernatural factions, and protecting the human world from supernatural threats, and mainly keeping the supernatural world a secret from the human one.
Lamar and the royal traded punches and kicks, some landing and dodging and blocking others. Lamar was able to get the upper hand at one point and he used his barrier like a ram to send the royal flying across the lot landing hard on his back and skidding across the pavement ruining his suit and scuffing the back of his shoes. It was a hard hit but not hard enough to keep him down, the royal quickly recovered but it had gave Lamar enough time to run into the building.
Lamar sat at the entry way breathing hard, he cancelled the two spells he had cast on himself. He may be powerful but holding to enhancement spells, fighting hand to hand, and making barriers would tire anyone out. The royal walked across the lot, his stride was smooth and confident. Lamar would of thought he was cool if he hadn’t just tried to kill him. The royal walked up to the entry way but stopped at the threshold, he couldn’t move forward, no matter how hard he tried he wasn’t able to enter. He was confused this was a public place, he should be able to enter.
“You look a little confused there buddy.”
“How is this possible.” The royal finally spoke in a deep gruff voice.
“Hex bags. Few of those puppies buried in just the right spot around the area.”
“Hex bags aren’t strong enough to keep me out.”
“They are when one of the main ingredients is tears from an angel.” The royal eyes widen in disbelief, there was no way that this human was able to get hold of angel tears. The bags themselves are made out of demon skin, so they pretty much keep anything that goes bump in the night out. You’re not getting in here no matter how hard you try.”
“You think you won, but you have to come out sometime.”
“Yeah I will in the morning, so stay out there if you want.” Lamar walked away into and headed to his office. Leaving the royal standing there seething. He walked into his office and shut the door, he could still see the royal there standing at the entrance not moving like a creepy statue. He grabbed his phone and called his best friend Sean who picked up on the third ring.
“What up big dog.” Sean said sounding out of breath.
“You okay?” Lamar asked.
“Yeah I’m fine, the boys and I just took out a vamp nest here on the Eastside.”
“Man you said you were going to wait for me.”
“I told you to call off work, we couldn’t put it off any longer.”
“Yeah yeah yeah, well if I would of called off then I wouldn’t been able to fight a royal.” Lamar said excitedly.
“You’re lying.”
“Who’s lying?” Lamar could hear Mycal in the background asking.
Lamar heard Sean tell him that he just fought a royal and he heard Mycal tell Sean to put the phone speaker.
“Did you really fight a royal and what kind of royal?” Mycal said almost as excited as Lamar. It is on his bucket list to go head to head with a royal type. Royals are pure bloods of their race, there bloodline has not been tainted with anyone that was not born into their race. Vampires and werewolves really took that hierarchy system to heart, and never let anyone forget it.
“Yeah and it’s vampire.”
“No way!” Mycal and Sean both said at the same time.
“Yes sir, and on top of that the hex bags I made to protect the hospital worked, he wasn’t able to get in here.”
“That’s awesome bro. Where is he now?”
“I’m not sure to be honest, maybe he left.”
“I would stay inside for now just to be safe.” Sean said sounding more concern then he wanted to, he knew Lamar could handle himself but this was a royal, which could start a major issue with the council if something happens.
“Yeah I am, I’ll see you guys in the morning at the usual spot.”
Lamar placed his phone on the charger, his battery was almost dead. He decided to look through the cameras to see if he could find the royal, but he was having no luck, he was just about to give up looking when it dawned on him that the cameras probably picked up the fight they had and if so that can be a huge problem for him. He was right, the entire fight was recorded, it wasn’t like the old days where he could just erase the tape, everything now was saved online but lucky for him he knew someone that could help.
Lamar grabbed his phone and scrolled through his contacts until he landed on the one he was looking for and hit call.
“Lamar! How are you babe?” Serenity said cheerfully. Serenity Scott, hacker god she could get into anything. Lamar met Serenity after saving her from a cult that was trying to sacrifice her to some low level demon so they can be blessed with riches. They have been good friends ever since, Lamar looks at her like a little sister.
“I’m doing good, just sitting here at work. How are you doing?”
“I’m great, just aced my last exam at MIT and now getting ready for fall break. I still can’t thank you enough for whatever you did to get me in here.”
“I told you no thanks is needed, I got you whenever and however I can.”
“Okay enough with the mussy stuff, what’s up?”
“If I give you an IP address and a time frame can you get rid of some footage for me?”
The human world was never allowed to find out that the things that go bump in the night were actually real. Serenity was human but Lamar trusted her with his life.
“You know who you are talking to right.”
“My bad.” Lamar chuckled.
“Just text me the information and I’ll take care of it for you.”
“You’re a life saver. And I better see you why you’re on your break as well.”
“I know I am and you will. I’ll text you when I’m done.”
“Okay, talk later, bye.”
“Bye.”
Lamar put his phone back on the charger and was getting ready to watch a movie to pass the time. Not more than ten minutes in he got a text from Serenity: it’s done, and that fight was wild, I hope you’re okay TTYL.
The rest of the night went by uneventful. When his relief came at 7 a.m. he was all too ready to go, he gave them the pass down information, grabbed his backpack and clocked out.
Making the journey to his car he thought about the fight that happened and if he should have killed the royal, what would of happened if he did. The council was a bunch of bureaucrats, they would serve him up on a silver platter to the vampires if they thought he had did anything wrong. Besides for telling his buddies and Serenity he thought it would be best to keep this one quiet.
He grabbed his keys out of his pocket and unlocked his truck, he threw his backpack in the back seat as he slid into the driver seat. He put the key in the ignition and paused for a second. “TUH.” He turned the key and the truck roared to life. This just got interesting he thought as he put the truck in drive and pulled off.
