Chapter 17: Jet Black Eyes

Mycal walked out of Elle’s office and to the front of the diner, it was only Sean, Daniel and Elle sitting quietly at a booth, all the other duskers left. Elle wanted to go check on Roberto and Crystal but decided to take some time with the boys after Mycal’s death.

“Why everyone so somber and why was I on Elle’s desk?” Mycal asked.

  “What the hell? Why, how?”

  “How what?” Mycal asked confused.

“How are you alive?” Elle said standing up in shock.

“Haven’t I always been alive?” Mycal walked forward and they backed away.

“What is wrong with you guys?”

“Look down.” Daniel said pointing at his chest. Mycal looked down at his chest where he seen a large hole in his shirt and a large amount of blood covering it.

“What happened to me?” He asked.

“What is the last thing you remember?” Sean asked.

“Snapping that Jason guys neck and everything after that is a blank.” Mycal admitted.

“The vampire king killed you; he punched a hole right through you like you were a wet paper bag.”

“Then how am I even here?”

“That’s what we like to know.” Elle said taking out her phone.

“Where is Lamar?” Daniel asked noticing he wasn’t with Mycal.

“I found him passed out on the floor so I sat him in Elle’s desk chair so he could get some rest.”

“Daniel go and check on Lamar. I’m going to hit up some of my contacts to see if they have heard of anything like this before, and Sean stay here and watch him.” She said pointing at Mycal.

“Watch me for what?” But Elle was already on the phone and walking outside. Sean pulled out his gun.

“Really dude, is that even necessary?”

“You were dead minutes ago and now you are walking around without a scratch on you. We don’t know how or why you are back, so I think it is.”

“I brought him back, Sean put your gun away.” Lamar said from the doorway, Daniel was holding him up because he was still pretty drained, but he wanted to see Mycal.

“What do you mean?” Sean said putting his gun up.

“How did you do it.” Daniel asked helping Lamar into a chair.

“I don’t know exactly, I just tried healing his wound, it wasn’t working at first, so I kept trying, pouring more of my mana into the healing. I started to feel the wound close, and then I could feel a heartbeat and then he opened his eyes and took a breath.” Lamar asked Sean to grab him a water, which he did. Daniel went outside and grabbed Elle.

“Lamar no mage has that type of power over life and death, not even you.” Said Sean as he handed Lamar a bottle of water.

“You disrupted the natural order of things.” Elle said.

“The natural order?” Lamar took a sip of the water.

“Mycal died, so when you brought him back you changed his natural order, he should no longer be here.”

“So, what are you saying, that he has to die again, because I want let that happen.” Lamar tried to stand but he was still too weak to do so.

“Calm down,” Elle said as she took a seat, “I don’t know what it means, this is uncharted waters for me too. We cannot tell anyone about this, we are going to have to hide Mycal until we figure this out. I don’t think me threatening the other duskers that seen him killed is going to work, we are going to have a tough time keeping them quiet about the 5th class thing.”

“Yeah, the light show you put on out there isn’t going to do you any favors.” Daniel said

“Do you have somewhere you can go?” Elle asked Mycal.

“My wife’s family has a cabin in the mountains of Colorado, we can go there and hide out until this all blow over.” Mycal said.

“Good you two,” she said pointing at Daniel and Sean, “help them gather supplies and make sure they are not seen leaving. Lamar and I are going to go to see a friend of mine.”

“We are?” Lamar didn’t want to go with Elle, he wanted to protect the others.

Elle didn’t give him a choice in the matter, Lamar said his goodbyes to Mycal and Mycal promised to call him once they got settled.

“Where are we going?” Lamar asked Elle as he got into the passenger seat of Elle’s car.

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

“We are going to see my exe husband.”

That was unexpected he thought but he didn’t say anything he just sat quietly and tried to get some rest, it was going to be about an hour drive at least and he was low on energy. Lamar wasn’t sleep for that long when Elle nudged him awake. He felt a little better though, so he was happy she let him sleep as long as he could. Elle got out the car and took a deep breath, it’s been years since she been back at her old home. Waves of emotions hit her as memories came flooding in. She just stood there staring.

  “You okay?’

“I’ll be fine.” She said wiping a tear from her eye.

They made their way to the front door, Lamar knocked, and a few moments later they were greeted by councilman Thomas.

  “Elle.” He said smiling.

“Jackass.” She said pushing pass him. The councilman just rolled his eyes.

  “Hey Thomas.”

“Lamar good to see you, my boy.” Thomas and Lamar embraced, he then lead him inside to the living room, where Elle was already sitting in Thomas’s favorite chair, she knew that would get a rise out of him, so she thought but he just ignored her and focused on Lamar.

“How have you been?” Lamar asked taking a seat on the couch and Thomas sat next to him.

“I’ve been good.” Thomas answered and Elle scoffed.

There was an awkward silence, not because of Elle throwing shade towards Thomas every time he talked, but because they knew what this conversation was going to be about and neither Elle or Thomas was looking forward to it. Lamar finally broke the silence.

“So, it’s not like I’m not happy to see you, but what is this all about?” Thomas and Elle looked at one another.

“We have somethings we need to tell you; we just don’t know how to say it.” Elle said.

  “Just say it.” Lamar demanded.

“Okay, well you’re not a normal dusker.” Thomas said.

“Well duh. You brought me all the way here to tell me something I already know.” Lamar laughed.

“No, you don’t get it, you’re only part dusker. Yes, your mother was a dusker, a very powerful healing mage that could also use offensive magic, but your father was not a dusker.” Elle said.

“Okay, so what was my father then?”

“He was an archangel.” Thomas said.

  “Hahahaha, yeah right.” Lamar smiled.

“We are serious, your mother fell in love with a very powerful angel, who clipped his wings and fell to be with her and you. That didn’t sit well with the other angels and on top of that some demons found out about your mother and you as well. They came after your parents but because he clipped his wings his powers were severely diminished, he was still more powerful than us, but they did all they could to get you out and to a safe place. Sadly, they didn’t make it.”

“Your mother was a part of our dusker party along with Dainel, Sean, and Mycals parents. The night the demons came your mother used the last bit of her power to send you to Thomas and myself.” She was trying to read Lamar, see where his head was at about all of this, but he didn’t really make any expression.

“You told me my parents died when one of your hunts went bad, so that was all a lie?”

“Yes. I promised your mother if it ever came to it that I will protect you and when the time was right, I’d tell you about them.”

“So demons killed my parents, I fought demons before, and if my parents were as strong as you say they are then how could they have loss?”

“You fought lower-level demons before, you never fought a upper-level demon, they don’t even bother with us, they don’t see a point.” Elle explained to Lamar.

  “Are you okay?” Thomas asked.

“I mean I just found out two of the people I trusted the most have been lying to me my entire life. That I’m part angel, and upper-level demons killed my parents.” Lamar stood up, he put his hands on the top of his head and took a deep breath.

“I understand if you are upset, you have every right to be,” Thomas said.

“Oh, thank you for giving me permission to be upset, you are a true gentleman.” Lamar said sarcastically.

“Watch it,” Elle’s tone changed in her voice, “I get you’re mad, but I know you aren’t crazy so watch how you speak to us.”

“I’m sorry.” Thomas told him not to worry about it.

“Do you have any questions?” Elle asked.

  “What class am I.”

“We honestly don’t know, you obviously have your mother’s mage class but considering you have defensive and offensive mage abilities, not to mention your strength and speed, you’d technically would fall under the fifth-class umbrella. But you are not a full dusker, so you aren’t considered to be in any class and not really knowing you father’s abilities make it kind of hard to know what you can do.”

“Elle said you brought Mycal back to life, is that true?” Thomas asked.

“Yes, but I didn’t know I could.” Lamar said.

“So what made you try?” Elle asked.

Lamar shrugged his shoulders, “I just thought what did I have to lose by trying. And I’m glad I did because Mycal is alive.”

“Maybe so, but something like this has to have dire consequences, it’s never been heard of before we don’t know what to expect.” Elle said.

“That’s not completely true.” Thomas admitted.

“What are you talking about?” Elle asked.

“In the early 1800’s there was a mage who specialized in healing. He lost his wife to a plague; he used blood magic to bring her back. But it wasn’t her, yes it was her body but it wasn’t her soul that he brought back.” Thomas explained to them.

“How do you know all of this stuff?” Elle asked.

“The council has an archive full of information on different mages, natural mages and practicing mages.”

“What’s a practicing mage?” Lamar asked.

“A mage that is not born with powers but acquire them over time through practice and some times other dangerous means. Like selling their soul for power or using blood magic.”

“So you think what I brought back wasn’t Mycal. There is no way, besides I didn’t even use blood magic.” Elle and Thomas looked at Lamar like they weren’t convinced.

“You were awfully tried and weak, that’s one of the signs of using powerful blood magic.” Elle said, she wanted to believe him.

“I’m telling the truth, have I used blood magic before, yes, but it wasn’t for this, and it has been years since I’ve used it. I was tried because I used up so much of my mana in the fight against the vampire king, and bringing Mycal back to life was also draining, but not because of blood magic.”

Lamar couldn’t believe that they were really thinking he used that type of magic after what it almost did to him. Blood magic is like a drug, you crave the power and the rush you get from using it, but it slowly kills your inside, aging your body and warping your mind.

“Okay if you say you did not use it, then we believe you.” Thomas said trying to calm Lamar down. He instructed Lamar to take a seat.

“Where is Mycal now?” Thomas asked.

  “Who is asking?” Elle replied.

  “Excuse me?”

  “You or the council?”

“Elle do you seriously think I would do something to Mycal.”

“I don’t know what to think anymore.”

“He is going to a cabin in Colorado.” Lamar said, the tension was getting high, and he wanted to try and bring it down.

Good he should be safe until we get things figured out.” Thomas said.

“So what do we do now?” Elle asked Thomas.

“You mean what would the council do?” Pausing for a moment to pour himself another drink. “Laws of duskers are clear, Lamar disrupted the natural order of things, if they found out they would want balance to be restored.”

  “Meaning what?”

“Elle you know exactly what that means, Mycal would have to be put to death and maybe even Lamar for what he did.”

“Let them try.” Lamar eyes went from brown to jet black.
