Chapter 6: Glossary: Part 1 & 2

  PART 1

  Psychia

The Psychia is the visible metaphysical cordate organ that produces magical energy.

Lord Berendin’s millennia of research concludes that it holds incredible potential. For those privy to its secrets, the power to create and destroy worlds lies at their fingertips.

For monsters, where the body and Psychia are interlinked, damaging the body also damages the Psychia. Likewise, healing the Psychia will also heal their bodies. While this results in a transient and fragile Psychia, expressing magic comes easier to monsterkind.

For humans, where the body and Psychia are disconnected, damaging the body does not damage the Psychia. Likewise, the inverse is true as well. This leads to a resilient Psychia with plenty of power left to spare, albeit difficult to harness.

For both species, the Psychia is indispensable. Without the Psychia, sentient life would not exist.

  SOUL

The ancient monster’s terminology for The Psychia that existed long before the Sealing Wars. In modern day, only the Dreemurr Nation uses it as an official term, reflecting their spiritual and emotional understanding, instead of a scientific one.

“It is the font of our compassion. The source of our will. The container of our “life force”. - Book of Monster Wisdom.”

  Magic

Magic is the series of phenomena associated with magical energy emitted by the Psychia.

On its own, magical energy exists intangibly in the surrounding air. But, when exerted upon by heart and will, it can transform into a facsimile of physical matter and replicate physical phenomena such as electricity, rain, fire and so on. The bodies of monsters are made of magic in this manner.

The majority of humans lack receptiveness to magic. Thus, for aeons, it was colluded with superstition, the occult, and the unknown, causing widespread discrimination for monsters and mages.

The tragedy of the Wisteria Genocide shall always be remembered, never forgotten.

  PART 2

  Magus

Plural, Magi. A practitioner of Psychia-based magecraft from The Magus Association school of thought. This title separates Magi from other mages in the world.

Some of the oldest mage families of the Occident still exist within the Magus Association today.

  Magus Association

The main institution for practitioners of Psychia-based magecraft, founded by Lord Berendin in the 11th century. Due to increased persecution, many mages were forced to unite under his banner for protection. It’s the only school of magic to ever be officially recognized by the kingdom.

Since monsterkind emerged from under Mount Ebott, The Magus Association has been credited with ending the Sealing War of legend. By training up seven youths to cast the Seven Soul Barrier, monster casualties were kept to an absolute minimum.

  Faith and Creed

The primary faith of The Magus Association revolves around the trinity of The Almighty, The Redeemer, and The Holy Fire. As such, the Association’s creed emphasises personal accountability.

“Guard magic as you would guard your heart. Show what needs to be shown, hide what needs to be hidden. Be shrewd. Be just. Be truthful. Above all, be merciful.”

To join the Magus Association, mages must agree to a strict code of conduct. However, not everyone who pledges loyalty experiences the change of heart demanded of them.

  Heretics

The Condemned. Criminals who use magic for evil, be they foreign mages or official Magi. When their malpractice is exposed, it is the duty of the Association’s enforcers to bring them to justice. The Knights of Berendin were the primary muscle for the task from the 11th to the 15th century. From then onwards, this role was assigned to the Vanquishers instead.
