ABCD HOSPITAL, US
Drops of water battered against the window as a young boy of 16 looked out towards the entrance of the Hospital. A yellow-coloured taxi pulled up and a boy of roughly the same age sat inside it, closing his umbrella.
Caleb sighed as he looked at the scene of his best friend Mark leaving after dropping off a “special request”.
----Caleb’s POV---
2 days ago, I was happily celebrating with my friends, Mark and Jessy, in the KPF NBNB restaurant.
You know, the usual way of me teasing both of them for being a couple, Jessy joking about me being gay, yada yada. She knew the chances of my type of woman existing were very slim.
We challenged each other about who could finish the glass of cola first, and as I started, I suddenly lost consciousness.
The last words I remembered wer- nah I don’t remember shit.
That night, when I woke up, I found myself receiving glares of disdain from my aunt and uncle. Realizing the situation, I thought, ‘Seems like I interrupted the bitch’s party’.
“You useless brat, why won't you just die already.” Aunt X said aloud.
Aunt X was a—(She boutta be useless after this, I ain’t writing. Just imagine some random 40-year-old Karen.)
“Meh, trust me, I tried.” I replied.
“Well, I guess your shenanigans are only for 6 more mon-” Aunt X was interrupted by the knock on the door by Nurse N.
“Pardon the intrusion, please.” the nurse said in an annoyed tone. “Mr Caleb, I come bearing bad news.”
"Also, Mr. and Mrs. Forbs visiting times are over; I request you leave. You may come back tomorrow at 10 A.M. when the patient is discharged.” The nurse continued in an authoritative voice.
Grumbling and cursing, they both left in an irritated state. “Should I continue?” N asked in a softer voice now, with hints of sympathy.
The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
"No reason not to, why deny a beauty's words" I said in an amused tone.
"I'll add concussion to the list" she said in a jokingly , then suddenly turned serious. "Though its a pity you won't be around to enjoy more of the world's beauty." the nurse said in a bitter yet trained tone.
“Doesn’t hurt to flirt a li- Wait, what do you mean!?” Caleb asked in a grim tone.
“Mr. Caleb I am afraid you, at maximum, have 6 more months to live; you have been diagnosed with CHD and are unlikely to survive.” the nurse continued, pity evident in her voice.
“Your family members have refused to pay for treatment; therefore, you will be discharged tomorrow morning.”
The room turned silent as I tried to process the information I had been provided.
“Those fuckers probably won't even come tomorrow morning to pick me up. Can you please get me my phone? I would like to make a call.”
2 minutes later that nurse came into the room with my phone, handed it to me without a word, and left.
“Hello Mr L, it's me, Caleb…”
Half an hour later, a middle-aged man with jet black hair, in a lawyer's uniform, entered the room carrying a poker face with gentle hints of annoyance.
“You know my boy, you, by the devil, have certainly been a great customer.”
"Please, sir, this is a grim matter. I need you to write my will.”
The man’s poker face broke, showing signs of discomfort and anger. “Kiddo, you have enough cash; why not just pay for the treament!”
To L, Caleb had been the son he never had. The child was also his regular customer, always in trouble due to the random outbursts he showed in search of unadulterated fun.
“Can we get this over with, CHD has a 100% death rate. Even if i pay for the treatment, I at most will extend my life by 2 years; i don't wanna live by the clock, best end it here and now"
I will ask Mark to bring the poison tomorrow. Make it such that when both him and Jessy get a quarter of my inheritance each, donate the rest wherever you want. Also add a clause stating that Mark is not to be persecuted. This is my last request of you.”
{ A/N: that is not the case in reality but I needed something to kill him. So yeah, this ain’t our earth}
Disappointed, L sighed "Very well, kid, let's meet in hell."
---Present---
The delivery of the poison had been delayed by a day due to the sudden storm. His aunt and uncle also hadn’t visited him during that time.
Mark was still, even after bringing it all the way here, so reluctant and teary-eyed that Caleb had to snatch the vial from his hands. After having a final chat, Mark left, still visibly depressed.
I sighed once more. I had been doing a lot of that lately. Was there any meaning in this?
Did he really need to?
Why was he doing this?
All of this was silenced by the whisper of the devil in his ears, telling him to go for it.
Telling him greater chances, more fun, lay ahead.
Clenching his eyes shut, he took the vial and poured its contents into his mouth. That night, as the thunder roared, a young boy died in a matter of minutes.
All in the name of a simple pursuit of adventure, that the voices in his mind promised.
