  Kristine stared at her light blue sneakers. "Many times. Too many to count. At some point it became a common sight. You'll hear people saying, Ah, the mountain is smoking a pack again, or someone's got a nice barbeque up there, things like that."

  "What if it's some kind of SOS?"

  Kristine's eyes widened. "I didn't think of it like that! But then again, the smoke has been going on since before I was born. Plus, our forest ranger would've picked up on that if it really was an SOS."
