Seeing how it was still moving freely with all the fire pouring on it, I fired my second to last explosive round at full power. The round shot off as it tracked the target. Whatever the target was, it was blown off its feet as the round hit it square in the chest.
Assuming it was dead, I refocused my vision forward and ran around the wall in front of me. That wall was the only thing that saved me as something hit where I had just been. Rubble pelted my back. My armor absorbing the blows. Anticipating another shot, I dropped to the ground.
Half crouching, half crawling through the rocky gravel, I made it to the edge of the now-destroyed wall. A small crater covered a small area around me, centered on where I had been standing. Walking towards me was another enemy. This time, covered in a blue haze.
This haze prevented me from being able to see what it was. What I could see was the globe of light that hovered above a hand. Suddenly, the ball flew forward. Not thinking, I shot at the ball.
It exploded. The hazy person was thrown back by the force of it. Aiming at where it had gone, I started to count to ten. If it didn’t get up before that, I would turn around and return to the mission.
As I said ten, I turned and pointed down the road at the target. Seeing my teammates moving forward, I jumped up and sprinted. A pair of bright lights to my left blazed in the gloomy weather. The sudden change in my surroundings was enough to catch my attention. I looked over just in time to see two more of the enemies.
I don’t think they thought that through because it also caught everyone else’s attention. Fire rained from everywhere. Even one of the turrets managed to join in as they fired their depleted uranium rounds upon the pair.

They both disappeared in a cloud of dust from all the bullets hitting the area around them. A series of explosions told me that a few other people were using their high explosive rounds on them.
The sounds of bullets smashing into the ground diminished as people stopped firing. My heart was hammering in my chest as I held my breath. No one on either side seemed to move as we waited for the dust to clear. Even those in the targeted building were holding back. Eyes bugging out as I finally realized what had been bugging me throughout this battle. Our surprise attackers were not on either side. Somehow, there was a third party on the field. Someone with at least just as much strength as the Sol system military.
A blast of wind and rain cleared the majority of the dust cloud surrounding the target. What it revealed boggled my mind. The two of them were standing where they had been. Neither looked harmed. Another explosion hit their position. Seeing the fire curl around some sort of translucent dome caused my heart to stall. Forget them being equal to the Sol system military. I had yet to hear of a shield generator small enough for a tank, let alone for a person to carry.
My HUD informed me that something was being aimed at the dome from the target building. Steam suddenly billowed up from where the two were standing, masking them from view again. Painting a line, my AI presented me with the information it was able to gather about the weapon and who was using it.
I had to blink at the information AI presented. Information showing that this laser was pumping out more power than one of the close-range carrier defense lasers. How they managed to get that much power confused me for a few seconds. That was until I remembered they had a quantum power tap in the building. I was just happy that none of the defenders had thought to use it against any of us in this fight. In fact, it was either incomplete, or they had been saving it until they had no other option.
