Quests and Priorities

Kyla – Second Class Mage / Medical Officer – Quicksilver

I knew I shouldn’t be getting attached to one of my current charges, let alone someone I was given a quest for, but something about John had drawn me in. That name just didn’t feel right. Maybe I should remind her that she needed to change it. As I thought that, another quest window popped up.

Was that a high reward? No, it was barely enough to cover any transaction with any of the galactic systems. Not that I would turn down the quest. Not when I was going to do so anyway. It also went hand in hand with my other quest.

Throughout my entire time doing quests, I had never seen so many social points given in one go. I mean, the silver was nice too, but the points were the real reward here. With enough points one could join a council or buy things that the system shops didn’t sell. Even buying a one-way ticket into another race.

Personally, I had been saving every point I had gotten to transfer to the elven race. Yes, they were a bit stuck up at times and most races hated them. Most of that hate stemmed from the fact that the elves had stayed holed up on their worlds for centuries. Sitting safe behind their magical protection and advanced defenses.

Defenses that relied on a system that was being eaten from the edges. Things that kept coming back no matter how many we killed. Things that would eat entire systems if left unchecked. Swarms that no one could stop.

Why did I want to become one of those stuck-up elves? Because they lived long safe lives. If I ever had children, I wanted them to stay as safe as I could make them. If that meant locking them inside an isolated civilization, I would do so without hesitation.

I had been working toward this goal for nearly a decade without pause. Learning as much different magics as I could in an effort to convince the system to give me more quests. Quests that gave points. Quests that got me closer to my goal. But there was something about this new quest. Something that was causing me to stop and take a breath.

Maybe I would be able to figure out what it was that was bothering me soon. Hopefully before the smoothies stopped tasting good to her. After all, they were designed to taste good only when one’s body was missing a ton of vitamins and nutrients. Typically, it was only used when someone was regrowing limbs or after a new tail decided to grow. Of course, the additional nanobots that made up the majority of the drink helped with that too.

Speaking of tails, how far was I from my fifth tail? After all, it had been over two years since the last one had grown. Was that fast? Yes. But not as fast as some of the more talented people I knew. Those people ended up the center of any mating ritual. Me, there was nearly no chance I would ever find someone who was willing to help me even through a single heat cycle.

Hmm…I wonder if there was something I could do to help John with what was to come. Then again, she did still have the equipment. Maybe I could give her a chance to use it one last time. Not because I wanted it, nope, not at all. God I needed to find someone for me.
