Chapter 27: Heal

I wake to a moving ship. Hopefully I get an opportunity to go for a swim without a giant serpent coming to bite off my willy. I’m getting claustrophobic and my travel bug doesn’t count when I'm on a moving ship since only the scenery is changing.

So today is a tad different than our usual routine.

The Professor has realised that our group was never properly shown around the ship and today is that day. I think there is an ulterior motive here but the girls are yet to pick up on this.

We get to have a look at the Kitchen, see what the waiters do, the janitor's room, the back end of the Pokémon centre and Pokémart, we get to meet the crew responsible for navigation and sailing the large ship.

By this point I have already realised why they are showing us all these things. The way she describes each role in greater detail and gets the staff to explain what their role is….. She is going to put the girls to work and that by extension likely includes me.

Our tour continues until one catches my eye. We get to see an operating theatre of the hospital on the ship. I didn’t even know there was a medical facility here so I'm super excited. I remember how busy and high tech hospitals were in my world. Especially an operating theatre. So what I see next is a HUGE disappointment. Is the equipment state of the art, yes. Do they have the technology to do cool shit, yes.

So you ask, what was there to be disappointed about.

Well it’s very simple, the people who were supposedly doctors and nurses were not through with… anything. It’s almost like they didn’t understand the importance of hygiene because their Pokémon could help them deal with most unwanted effects post operation. They also were really bad with cross checking medications.

The group goes to leave the hospital to continue the tour and I just sit there in shock and disgust. I’m quickly forgotten as the girls are too immersed in whatever is going on, the Professor glances my way and then continues the tour.

Once the girls eventually realise that i’m not there she calms them and states that i’ll be staying to help out at the hospital for now.

The doctor calls out to a nurse “Can I get some fluids please for this patient, he is dehydrated and badly burned.”

I’m disgusted! I can read, the nurse can read, the doctor can read and yet the only one properly checking the bag of fluids is me. I’m currently watching as they are about to attach a bag of Dextrose 10% (Diluted Sugar) into the fluid drip for treating dehydration.

This is some kind of joke right? I watch as they attach and start to run the fluid through the drip. ……

I can’t continue watching anymore, you are going to cause that patient to die you imbeciles!

Damn the consequences, I set up a link to the doctor running the fluids “STOP”.

The doctor jumps and looks at the nurse and asks her why she told him to stop. She shrugs her shoulders saying she said no such thing, he turns back to his patient.

  “WRONG FLUID”

He huffs and checks the fluid bag to gasp and quickly turns it off. The doctor looks back at the nurse. “Well why didn’t you say anything then! I’d like you to go home for the day and reflect on your actions.”

The nurse was about to ask what he meant when she noticed the bag of glucose hanging from the bed. She glows a deep red in shame as she realises her mistake.

She stutters out “I’m so sorry doctor..” as she rushes out the door to head home, in her nurse's outfit.

The doctor sighs in frustration. “Guess I need to do things on my own again today.”

I idle up to the man in his blues and bump up against his side. “Ooak”

He is surprised to see me and picks me up, I stare him in the eye and give him a hit of ‘Baby doll eyes’.

“How did you get in here little fella, were you with that tour group from earlier?”

  I give him another “Seeeel”

He just laughs at my antics. “All right, you can stay and keep me company whilst I work!”

The day passes as I observe the doctor at work.

The ship rocks violently and shakes whilst the peal of thunder can be heard every now and again. Must be a pretty bad storm right now. I think nothing of it until a blood soaked patient is dragged through the doors.

I can hear screaming and whichever ace trainer it is seems to be in agony. A nurse joy has her Chansey quickly casting some sort of healing upon the man but it is mostly ineffective since his leg is still mostly injured and at a wrong angle.

The doctor quickly jumps into action and requests the nurse to stay. She declines as she has more patients coming into the Pokémon centre.

“He’s in your hands doc, i’m sure he will be fine”

The doctor looks towards the patient who has been unceremoniously dumped onto his bed from the stretcher and winces as he inspects the injury site.

He rushes off to grab a phone and request further assistance since he needs someone to help hold the leg.

Definitely an oversight to work with one person down. Also strange that there are so few medical professionals working in a hospital… although since it’s on a ship maybe it is not so strange. I still think it’s shit planning.

I amble across the table and look down at the patient on the bed. I can see he continues to writhe in pain and watch as a stain of red continues to spread on the bed sheet beneath his leg.

I grab the first thing I find on the bench, a rope like material and quickly jump across onto the blood soaked bed. Luckily his leg is raised in the air as I quickly work on attaching the rope above his injury site and attempt to tie it off.

“What the hell are you doingggg.” The trainer yells at me in confusion and fear.

The doctor quickly turns around to see a small little seal covered in blood with a rope in its jaws attempting to tie it against the patient's leg.

He goes to grab me but I use Evade and he just can’t seem to get a good grip. He notes the blood soaking the bed sheet and then quickly rushes to the patient's side. He grabs the rope and helps to tie it over the site above the wound, effectively cutting off circulation and therefore stopping the patient's massive blood loss.

“Good thinking little guy, I guess i’m a little overwhelmed right now but that was the right call, sorry for trying to throw you out”

With that the Doctor looks at me again but is interrupted by the sound of the patient's screams.

The doctor pulls out some pain relief and works on getting a needle into him. I on the other hand look at the injury with FOCUS ENERGY and feel confident in saying that the break is in his upper femur, it also looks like a clean break. So I rummage around the hospital looking for something that can help his leg.

I find a device that looks close enough to a femur traction splint in one of the big bags and drag it across to the doctor. He has just given some pain relief for the patient and the screaming has lessened but not stopped.

A broken leg kind of does that for anybody. I lightly clamp my teeth down on the patient's leg to stretch it out as the doctor applies the traction splint. The bleeding has stopped and the break now looks far better than it did before. The worst part is over and the patients screams stop as the pressure from the two broken parts of the bone rubbing against each other and the muscles cease.

I flop onto the side as the patient is stabilised and watch as another doctor rushes into the room in a wheelchair. Sweat beads his brow and he quickly takes a big puff from his puffer.

“Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry I took so long, I was treating some of the other trainers in the Pokémon centre first.”

The tired doctor looks up from his work. I can see he is mentally exhausted but if there are more patients he has no choice but to prepare for more work.

  “Thank you for coming Wally!”

I do a double take as that name seems familiar to me. I spot a large bipedal pokemon behind him, white and green. I recognise that Pokémon too, It’s a Gallade.

Wally looks at me and sees me covered in blood.

“Might want to get that Pokémon out of here, he seems to have made a real mess of things Doctor Brown!”

Brown gives a little chuckle. “Actually, he has been helping me immensely, I'd like to request his assistance from his trainers within the hospital if that is okay.”

Wally continues to stare at me and then just shrugs his shoulders. “Your funeral buddy, insurance isn’t going to cover that. Anyhow you can relax now, there are no more patients at this stage and I'm here now. You can go clean up that Pokémon and bring it back to his trainer and then have the rest of the day off.”

With that Dr Brown scoops me up, ignoring the blood soaking into his scrubs and takes me off via a side door to one of the showers. He helps clean me up, gets a change of clothes and we head off in search of the girls.

"By the way little guy, my name is Chase. I look forward to working closely in the future if you will have me."

I'm happy as heck and give him an affirmation "SEEL!"

Somehow it feels good to not have been the cause of this catastrophe this time but I'm certainly curious to see what has happened. My thoughts are interrupted by an unexpected sound.

*DING - Medical Maniac - Passive Unlocked - You work with furor, chaos and a trained eye to get the best outcomes for your patients.*

*DING - trainer lvl increased from 11>12* Obtained 5 Great balls, 2 Super Potions.

*DING - Sparky has levelled to 21* x 4 bonus stats for taking on a Pokémon far above your level

*DING - Sparky has learned THUNDER - A wicked thunderbolt is dropped on the target to inflict damage. It may also leave the target with paralysis. - Costs 100MP per thunderbolt.

I dump the Pokéballs into option B as always, the more I gain the higher the chance for me to pick up more nifty abilities like Map and Compass.

We head towards the Pokécentre, a frantic Nurse Joy and Chansey are working on an injured and familiar looking fish along with a badly injured Steelix, I can also see off to the side a badly hurt Arcanine and judging by its lack of movement i’d say the likelihood that he is dead is pretty damn high.

I get confirmation as one of the trainers whispers to another, if Arcanine didn’t react in time then his ACE would have died. He’s a hero.

I get scooped up by a worried looking Jess and I watch as health potions are dumped onto Sparky. I can see that her fins are torn and she is a smoking mess. Somehow I feel like her use of and learning such a high levelled move has backfired.

“Hi boss, took you long enough you slacker.”
