Chapter 19: j-23

The floors downstairs are full of people yelling and crying, I could only make out a few words since they were curses towards Lilith. The muffled screaming died down after around 2 minutes.

Lilith is taking her time writing the healing spell... if it is a healing spell.

  “What spell are you making?”

“I'm connecting our hearts together... so they can't kill me in court without killing you.” She finishes off the spell and rips it, I stand up to leave.

  “Yeah no.”

“You don't get a choice.” She freezes me with the same technique the kid and mom used, “urgh I hate this spell, reminds me of her." She tiptoes over to me “you know if that kid actually used his innate magic, you'd be dead.” She places the piece of paper on my forehead.

At this point I'm just prey, there wasn't a single moment when she wasn't in control of the situation, I understand that now. In my struggling against the spell, I feel a faint drip of my innate magic, sliding down my finger, onto the wooden floor with a drip. I didn't have any material to conjure that.

She places her forehead on mine, the paper in between the seam, “morva eris.” It burns up quietly.

Nothing feels any different, except for her behaviour, “okay okay, that was better than my last plan, right? Use you as leverage.” She lets me go and I fall on the bed, “maybe we should both end it right in front of my boss... imagine how pissed she would be.”

She paces the room, if she had pupils they’d definitely be dilated, she looks almost high. “You work your WHOLE life, and this is the reward they give me? I was a goddamn PRODIGY Fay.” She walks over to me and grabs my arm, “do you understand how good it feels to be the strongest by an overwhelming margin in a group of people?”

She steps back pulling me up with her, “lets hit the dance floor.”

The burn on my chest from my previous battle, along with my shoulder being bruised makes her stop, “can you heal me?”

“Right, need your weak feeble human body to be healed, then we can dance.” She writes out a quick spell, letting out the two words in a bored manner, it burns on my chest, “better?”

I nod, she swings the door open and lets me follow her, a part of me wants to just escape, run the opposite direction, but I know she can probably capture me from anywhere in the world, at least that's the impression she has given me.

I follow her down the steps, the once lively space is now completely empty, “huh... they must've left.” She steps into the living room where blood still paints every piece of furniture, “everyone is afraid of me.”

She turns to me, stepping back a bit and sitting on the bloody couch, “this is power Fay, I killed a party.”

The silence of the whole house doesn't make sense, a boy just lost his mother, there would be crying, outside of the window I see that every carriage and car is still parked by the cliff.

“We should probably go.” I tell her, demanding with my eyes that she listens to me.

“Relax, they wouldn't be dumb enough to try anything, they are hiding.”

I hear a few faint footsteps behind me, then the voices of over 10 people saying “morva eris” at the same time.

Lilith has that same look of fear I saw when she was with her boss, she gets up and runs towards the group of demons before activating whatever spell they setup.

My ears pop from the sheer volume of the blast I heard, a yellow beam of light hits Lilith directly, everything in my vision goes white and then purple as the beam burns itself into my eyes.

It shoots a circular hole through the entire mansion, through the grass, through the dirt, through the rock, through the cliff into the ocean, giving me a direct window into the waves through a circular cave.

I fall onto the stairs as over 20 demons fill the area, “did we get her?” The boy runs over to the hole, a smile creeps up on his face as he picks up a piece of the dress Lilith had on, “she is dead.”

She is not dead. If she was dead id be dead.

The red-haired woman in the black dress walks beside me, “you’re staying here.” She grabs my shoulder and lifts me up, I grab her arms to stabilize myself.

I speak softly, “thank you for killing her... I hated her.”

The woman smiles, “I did too.” She speaks in my tone while putting me on the wall, red chains go through the wall and over my body, strapping me to it, “you'll be fine. We just need you as a hostage.”

This content has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

Hostage... am I really that important? None of the politics have been explained to me, “you really don't need to trap me, I'll go along with anything you say.”

Play as the helpless human, “and it really hurts being up here.” I let out a small laugh, “I promise I'll be good.”

I don't want to be here when Lilith comes back and murders everyone.

“Oh... I guess so, just stay near me.” She pinches at my cheek and undoes the chains.

A voice of the boy can be heard, “I found her!”

The lady follows the crowd checking on Lilith's body, I follow as instructed.

There it was, Lilith’s body on the grass, covered in purple blood from an open wound on her forehead, I step out of the hole in the wall, she is trying to repair herself, her legs unbreaking themselves with sickening cracks. I assumed she would be fine, I always saw her as indestructible.

“Stop the healing process.” The red-haired lady shouts at some purple haired woman.

“Can do.” red sparkles start to emit from her hands, the healing that Lilith was trying to do stops. Only her faint breathing remains.

The red-haired woman walks over to the body, the boy jumping up and down beside her, “think I like you best when you’re drenched in blood from head to toe.”

They’re going to kill her. I die when they kill her. “Hey, can I see her body?” I need to act nonchalantly.

The red-haired woman looks up towards me, “I heard what she did to you, taught you magic... but she really just tortured you huh? Like with anyone weaker than her.”

“Yep.” I take a few steps forward, the young boy is shaking in rage, what did I ever do to him?

The woman kicks the body towards me, Lilith's eyes are closed, and yet again I feel the same feeling of empathy, “can I kill her?”

The orange haired boy shouts out, “NO, I want to, me. She killed MY mom, not yours.”

“Hey...” I continue with my calm attitude, how I used to be before everything happened, I've been mostly silent and submissive up to this point, letting things happen since I didn't have much power, “we can both at the same time... that means there would be more damage, right?”

He jumps up while grinning, “oh...her head will go BOOM.”

I nod, “yep, blood will go everywhere.”

I convert some grass into the liquid, it collects around my feet like a shadow, “you ready?”

What do I do here? How do I get Lilith away safely? Almost everyone is staring at me as I prepare my attack on Lilith.

“Okay... on 3?” I give the kid a nod, he seems a lot more neutral now, like his mom didn't even matter, only revenge does.

  “1...”

I need to drag her away... I start to develop the liquid into a two fingered hand, it shakes as i visualize it, I need to fling her off the cliff...

  “2...”

I grab Lilith’s leg with the liquid and focus the hand throwing her off the cliff, adding weight into the equation, how her body will react.

I don't say the word ‘three’ and fling her body like a projectile off the cliff into the ocean, the liquid wrapping around her leg like a sling shot. I let go of the liquid once her body reaches full velocity and her body bounces on the grass before falling off the cliff face, twisting on itself. Everyone who was staring at me now turns to Lilith and runs to the edge, including the red-haired woman to hopefully salvage this situation.

Nobody is bothering to stop me, they probably assumed ‘oh the stupid human thought throwing her off a cliff would kill her.’ This shows just how spontaneous this plan was for them, this wasn't some big setup, they didn't plan on someone making a stupid mistake like this.

I begin running towards the hole, running inside before anyone can notice, my heart hasn't stopped, Lilith is strong she will fare better in the ocean than with the demons.

Nobody bothers to follow me, Lilith clearly being more important, I run through the front door and towards the carriage, “START THE CARRIAGE.” The clone in the front seat looks confused.

I reach beside her, “please, go to Lilith’s manor.”

  “We... can't without her permission.”

“Well, where can we go?” My breath runs ragged.

“Well... you have authority to go to the experiment sites.”

  Home. I can go home.

“Okay. Go to experiment site, j-23.” I run into the back sitting on the comfortable seats.

The clone doesn't even question that we are leaving behind Lilith, she must be done with her as well. the carriage moves over the grass until... it hits more grass. The smell of the mud town comes through the curtained windows, but the carriage is definitely on grass.

“Thanks, Nul- oh I mean... clone... thank you.”

“Be safe... I'm hiding in the back.” She says from the front seat, moving out and into the doors, I step out as she steps in, my feet touch the patch of bright green grass that is surrounded by mud.

I look around the town, almost every hut had been taken down, which makes sense considering most were empty after all the deaths Lilith caused. Pieces of wooden planks litter the mud, the food clinic had been redecorated, a new door made of those wooden planks, plants crawling up the walls, some trees that looked tropical, a mismatch of different seasons and climates.

Two people step out of the food clinic, I can see through the crack of the door that everyone is hiding inside probably due to the noise of the carriage, I wave,” hey...”

Noah and Anne step down the steps into the small grass path, Noah is the first to speak, “you here to take one of us again?”

“I'm not... just... a lot has happened...” My heart begins to beat rapidly, I fall onto the floor, my face rolling in the mud. Anne is the first to run over and check what's wrong, makes sense, she was a nurse, right?

“He is having a heart attack.” She begins to push on my chest, trying to get my heart to be regularly

My chest tightens further, I claw at my clothes instinctively.

Lilith died, didn't she? I cough up water somehow, it fills my mouth with a salty aftertaste. Cuts and bruises begin to appear on my body, like she is transferring her pain to mine.

I cough up more water, my chest tightens further, Anne still pushing her hands into my chest as hard as she can.

Noah is above me, looking down, “just... just get Jackson to heal him.”

Right, I forgot I sent the clone Jackson here.
