Appendix H: A Tract on the Sun God and the Solar Cycle

A Tract Regarding the Solar Cycle and the Bleeding Moon for Monastic Initiates, written by High Sun Priest Father Ignacio, published by the Imperial Court Press, 940 ME

  Introduction

The story of Helios’ glory is a cycle, and thus always must both begin and end in the same place. The story is the most powerful ever told, and many artistic retellings will anchor their tale around whichever solar phase the creator wishes to give greatest emphasis. For total illumination, however, we must start and finish our education with the High King Helios enthroned in all His glory.

  High Noon

The High Sun is the supreme ruler, and the ultimate source of all authority both mortal and divine. He is also the ultimate source of all energy and male potence; representing the universal active force in its most primordial form. It is the insemination of His vital energy which allows life to grow and flourish here upon the Earth Mother.

King Helios’ eye is ever outstretched over all creation in judgement, although the Sea Lord has been known to blow clouds to obscure the view of his wife. He has reason for concern, it is at this time that Helios roams the earth, frolicking with nymphs and dryads. It is during this time He also visits beautiful mortal women or lads sunning their bare skin, and it is this aspect of the Sun God which produced the demi-gods spoken of in the scriptures during these trysts.

  The Setting Sun

The setting sun represents Helios the Patriarch. While King Helios is the source of political authority, the Patriarch represents religious authority and the father’s leadership within the family. They may seem similar, but there are differences between the King and the Patriarch.

King Helios sits directly overhead; his judgement is unbiased and impartial. He errs neither towards one side, nor the other. The Patriarch is first and foremost, a father. He shows mercy and temperance. The further the sun wanes, the farther this patience extends, until it becomes inaction. It is for this reason Helios must rest to restore Himself.

As a source of wisdom, gained through experience, the Patriarch shows Himself in the scriptures to offer guidance to mankind. It is for this reason the Patriarch is also the source of religious authority; it is only through His divinely inspired communications that we possess the scriptures today.

  The Dreaming Sun

The sun after it has set is the most mysterious of Helios’ aspects, at least among the uninitiated. This is the sign of untapped power, energy waiting to be unleashed. It is through His dreams that Helios first created the world, and then all the people in it.

When the Patriarch has grown so aged that he is no longer capable of any action, he must retreat to his chamber, leaving His wife Luna with temporary mastery over the world as night falls. In his bedchamber, the Sun God enters a restorative sleep which once again rejuvenates Him and restores His youthly vigor.

It is from the Dreaming Sun that the male potential to create life originates. For this reason, this aspect also holds the greatest mystical potential for thaumaturgists. Many mages worship the Dreaming Sun foremost in their prayers.

The Dead Sun and Bleeding Luna

To discuss the Dreaming Sun, we must also discuss Bleeding Luna and the Dead Sun.

The Great Father, which created the universe, had two sons. The eldest son was destined to inherit the totality of the All-Father’s power and majesty in time, but he was greedy and did not wish to wait. The second son was dutiful to his father, and loved his brother, though he knew better than to trust him.

The second son was content to allow his brother to take their father’s place, until one day he returned to their father’s tent to find him run-through by his brother’s blade, dying in his wife Luna’s arms. It is for this reason the sun and moon will on occasion shine red, rather than their normal hue.

This astrological event is a harbinger of betrayal, upheaval, bloodshed, and destruction. It signals the end of an old order, and the institution of a new one.

  The Avenging Sun

It is at this point the cycle turns, and the second son becomes Helios Rising, the Avenging Sun. The rightful, yet uncrowned, king is the symbol of masculine virility and strength. He is an athlete and a warrior, representing the emergence of active force. Unlike the Patriarch, the Rising Sun errs not towards mercy or compassion, but towards justice and retribution.

To self-actualize, the Rising Sun first finds His brother, whom He destroys and absorbs into Himself. Then, to set the universe back into balance, He marries His own Mother Luna to become His own father. Thus, the High King Helios is restored to his full majesty as the rising sun reaches its highest point at mid-day, and the ring begins anew.

  Conclusion

Like Luna, Helios is a god with many faces and aspects. These beings are neither entirely separate from one another, nor do they entirely comprise a single whole. They are a unitary being of separate parts. Just as an anatomist may examine a man both as a whole-body system, and as discreet organs, the student of theology must study both Helios as His complete self, as well as Helios in each of His discreet aspects.
