An excerpt from Luna’s Pearls and a Sapphire Moon: A History of Female Homosexuality in the Medieval Period by Yves Wolfe, published by New Age Publications, 1590 ME
Unlike the story of Luna’s pearls (which appears in many medieval manuscripts, but no original holy texts) the story of the blue moon appears in one form or another as part of many authentic ancient scriptures. The most explicit of these were heavily censored by the church during the late Imperial and early medieval era, but the recently discovered Salt Lake Scrolls have shown us an expansive version of this story, which corroborates the validity of many heretofore discredited theories regarding previously ‘heretical’ accounts.
When the First Men began to age and die, it was Luna who suggested to Her husband that living things be divided into male and female, so that they could procreate and reproduce themselves without the constant direct intervention of the gods. Luna thus became mother to the conception of ‘woman’ itself.
It’s said that, of those Luna chose as Her portion of all living things to become Her daughters, no creature was more beautiful than Esha. Esha was also very kind and charitable; she was wise and guided others by her sage advice. Finally, she was also spiritually aware and in harmony with the universe around her. Thus, she epitomized the virtues of every lunar phase.
Because of this, of all womankind, she held a special place in Luna’s heart. Esha delighted in her new body as a woman, and studied it as one of the earliest physicians. It is for this reason that she is considered the patron saint of midwifery and gynecology.
The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
After overseeing the first royal birth in this new era of men and women, she was granted the payment of a raw sapphire, larger and more magnificent than any other. Esha loved Luna, and wished to make Her a gift unlike any seen before. She fashioned the sapphire herself, cutting the gem along sacred lines to transform it into a holy offering.
Esha waited until the full moon, then went out alone that night to the high place and prayed to her Goddess. Luna came to her, and Esha presented the jewel to Her. That is why, it is said, that on certain occasions the moon shines blue in the night sky.
From here the scriptures tell us they ‘shared a love that surpassed the love for their husbands.’ The notion that Luna and Esha were lovers is not as new as some conservative scholars have suggested. In light of recent translations, many appearances of the ‘sapphire moon’ in religious artwork at nunneries across the continent are now being reappraised.
This reevaluation is happening in tandem with a simultaneous reappraisal regarding the historical accuracy in many elements of the Dame Veronique de Loix story previously considered only folk lore. It’s no coincidence that many images of Veronique and her maidservant-companion Theodora feature the sapphire moon iconography prominently.
It’s now finally no longer academic sacrilege to suggest that the Dame de Loix was bisexual and also took female lovers. On this point we must regretfully thank Master Diviner Devalance for opening the conversation on the topic, with his excellently researched second book- which stands out starkly amongst a bibliography otherwise comprised of reactionary, misogynistic, imperialist garbage.
